Use Social Bookmarking Sites To Get Traffic For Your Lens, Blog or Website

Bookmarking your lens is a great way to get backlinks to your lens, blog or site. Backlinks are definitely something you want. The more sites that link to your stuff, the better search engines look at it. You will get traffic from the bookmarking sites and from the search engines.

Do It Right

After you sign up for each site, make sure you fill out your profile. Someone is more likely to click through on your links if you have details on your profile that draw them in, and get them interested. I know I just keep going if all I find is a blank profile and nothing on it that makes me think I may have similar interests.

The growth of your links on these bookmarking sites has to happen naturally and progressively. You don't want to just bookmark to every site you can find all in a few days. The search engines such as Google and Yahoo want to see this as spamming. You don't want that. Do a little here and a little there.

I usually do a little activity on each site as I am bookmarking my lenses. As I bookmark to each site, I look around the site and vote on or save different links I find interesting to my profile.

If you only bookmark your own links on these sites, the search engines will drop you like a hot potato. Find other links on the site you like and leave a comment. Remember to save links you find on that site to your profile, or vote on them or whatever that particular site requires. The more active you are on a site, the more likely you are to get traffic to your profile and clicks through to your lenses, blog or site.

Most people don't find a profile interesting if there are links that obviously only belong to that person and nothing from any other source. It feels too much like an advertisement and not a very good one at that.

Use your bookmarks to get people interested. Ok, so we already went over the fact that you should bookmark sites other than your own. So why not use these other bookmarks to draw people in. If you bookmark things that go along with your site that might get someone interested, when they see that bookmark then they go look at your other stuff to check you out. When they go look, they see all these other bookmarks that go right along with that topic. If they like what they see, they will start to follow you and see your new bookmarks.

Now, I don't mean for you to bookmark your competition. You don't want to help drive traffic to the other guys site. Here is an example of what I mean. Say your site is about dog training. You can bookmark sites about pet supplies, pet health or something like that. This way when someone interested in pet supplies may also see you have all those bookmarks on pet health and dog training and decide to follow you since you have similar interest to theirs. (I hope that made sense.)

If you have multiple sites with multiple topics, do the same procedure with each site. Sort of have a grouping of sites along with yours for each topic.

These folks that decide to follow you will copy or add your bookmarks to their list. They may also add them to other bookmarking sites since a lot of people use more than one site. So, the next thing you know you have gone viral with your links. Cool huh!?

There are varying opinions on what is the right strategy to get traffic from these sites. Here is my experience with getting traffic from social bookmarking. I DO get good quality traffic from sites I am not all that active on.

I am more fond of certain social bookmarking sites than the others, so I am more active on them. I know I draw in more traffic from people I may befriend or that are curious about me and my activities. I

Just please don't "spam" these sites with self promotion. That will get all of Squidoo banned from them. Try to follow the suggestions I have above about spending a few minutes on each site as you bookmark to vote on and save other links to your profile. This way you contribute something to that social community.

The last but most important tip is to tag your links well and make a good description that is a great example of what they will find if they click through to your site. Use the description to try to draw people to your site.

    More great insight on building traffic to my lenses... greatly appreciated as I am still new and learning a lot about traffic and backlinks and content and ... and... and... The learning curve is never ending - but I'm hoping it is going to lead to a long and prosperous road to success!

    Good info. Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm an affiliate marketer and this will really help with my Google rankings. I like the tip about not spamming with just your own URL and sharing your appreciation of other peoples work as well.
