The Prospecting Power of Social Marketing

How To Connect With Prospects and Make More Sales

The concept of social marketing is not difficult, once you understand the basic premise behind it. In one of my other lenses, Social Network Marketing, I talk about the need for relationships in marketing.

When we use the phrase "social marketing" we must remember which word comes first, it is the word "social"

In the olden days, folks would gather around their town square, not simply to sell their wares, but to socialize. They cared about one another and they wanted to find
out what was happening in one another's lives.

The world wide web today presents us with a similar opportunity, but now on a global scale.

Think of a hobby that you enjoy, music, books, horses, whatever. Imagine, there are groups in hundreds of other countries and states that enjoy the same interests that you have. Now consider, with the touch of a button (notwithstanding a language barrier) you are connected!

So then, where are these "town squares" where people are gathering together today?

You can think about the obvious, such as Facebook and Myspace. I am constantly amazed at who finds me on Facebook and pings me, people I haven't seen, nor heard from in years.

Other places may not seem so obvious, such as right here at /squidoo.com">Squidoo! What you share in your lenses is a way of "connecting" with people who have similar interests as you.

Don't simply think of your posts as "selling" but rather think of your contributions as "socializing."

You should maintain the same mindset when using other social tools like social bookmarking, blogging, or twitter.

When you connect with people naturally, you are then able to softly and gently introduce them (there's the marketing side of it) to products or service that have been of benefit to you. If they "share" your interests, doesn't it stand to reason that they also might benefit from the same products or services?

When you think about marketing on the web today, think first about social marketing and whatever you do, don't neglect the social side of life.
