Let's start off by explaining and looking at what social marketing actually is. You might have some questions about exactly what it is, why you'd want to do it, and what the different types of social marketing sites are.

Let's first off look at what social marketing is. Let's just go through exactly what it is.

#1. WHAT IS SOCIAL MARKETING?

Social marketing is different from other types of marketing for a number of reasons.

-User driven

The first is that it's user-driven, so it's driven by the users rather than by the website owners. All the content comes from the users, the actual people that make up the profiles on the website.

-Not marketer friendly

Because of that it means that it's not actually that marketer friendly. It's not that commercial. The site owners are obviously commercial. They are looking to make money from their site, but they don't really like you posting too many commercial messages on their website, so you've got to be careful and go a little bit under the radar when you're marketing on social marketing sites because they're not overly commercial. They're not marketer friendly.

-Fast to react

The other thing about social marketing sites is that they're fast to react. You can get a message out. You can get links put out and you can inform people about things using social marketing a lot quicker than you can with any other way of marketing on the internet.

-Garbage in, garbage out

Lastly it's this idea of garbage in, garbage out. You get out of social marketing what you put into it. If you just go and register at the sites I'm going to explain to you and show you, and don't do anything with them on a regular basis, you're not going to get any traffic. You get out of it what you actually put in.

-It's effective!

It really, really does work. Although there are some new sites cropping up that haven't been tested, some of the time-tested ones are really building up entire businesses on their own by people who understand how to use them.

-You can be yourself!

The final reason why you should do this is you can be yourself. You don't need to hide behind a mask. You don't need to pretend to be this big marketer or hide behind a business name. You can just be yourself as an individual.

#3. DIFFERENT TYPES OF WEBSITES

There are different types of social marketing sites, because people talk about web 2.0, social marketing, social networking, and social bookmarking. What are the different types of sites?

Here we are on MySpace.com and it's time to actually set up your account with MySpace.

You'll see here a few options. Log in if you've already got an account or sign up, so we're going to click obviously on Sign Up. Then we need to put in our details. There's various bits of information you've got to put in here. Confirm your email address again, put in a password, select your country, post code, your date of birth, etc.

As you're going through this, my recommendation to you is that you put in totally accurate information. Some people have tried testing by putting in information that is suited to your market.

You might think that people in your marketplace are mainly male or they're mainly a certain age or they're mainly located in a certain place, so you could in theory just select that type of criteria here, but I'm recommending to you that you just put in the details that reflect who you are. We're now on your Profile page and it's time to go off and start adding friends so that you can get featured on their profile pages and start getting traffic.

WAYS TO ADD FRIENDS

Import from email

There's a few ways you can do this. When you started your MySpace account you might have been able to import some of your friends from your email address, so you might have some friends down here already.

You can go and click on them and go see which friends they've got, and then go and add them and so on. You may be able to do that and we'll come onto that in a moment.

There's a few other options available to you. We'll go through each of these in turn, so that's one option. You might have more friends down here other than MySpace founder, Tom. You might have those.

Search by location, age, etc.

Something else you can do is you can click Browse and go browse people in different locations and ages and that type of thing. We'll come onto that in a minute. You can also search.

Adding friends from other profiles

First let's look at clicking on Tom's profile, seeing as for most people he's going to be the first friend you've got in MySpace. When you click on his link this opens up in his profile. That's his picture. You can scroll down here to learn bits about him.

You can see here he's got something like 236 million friends. Obviously he's automatically added as a friend to everybody that joins MySpace and that's how many people are in MySpace.

What you can do is click on any of the people in here and go and add them as a friend. Now Tom is already your friend, so you don't need to add him, but you can add any of these people here.

What you can also do is you can view all of Tom's friends, which is all those millions. I wouldn't recommend doing that, but you can go down here and see other people that are in here. You just click on one of these links and it goes to their profile page.

So let me just go and do that and we'll open up a couple of these. Let's just say we'll open up this first one. These are the comments that have been made on Tom's page.

You'll find that when you start getting a lot of friends people will start to make comments on your page. You'll see that when they do that a link appears back to their profile, so it's a great way to get traffic to your profile by posting comments on other people's pages.
