Why is protecting my Social Security Number so important?

Your Social Security Number is used by Government agencies, Creditors, etc. to identify who you are. These Nine numbers are issued to you and you alone. No two individuals share the same numbers. These numbers are your key identity and should always be protected.  If a thief has your Social Security Number they can open new accounts in your name, access pre-exsisting accounts, or they can commit crimes in your name, etc.

Keeping your Social Security Card secured in a safe place will help prevent Identity Theft from happening to you.

How can I protect my Social Security Number?

*Memorize your Social Security Number. This way you don't need to carry it in your wallet unless needed to show proof.
*Shred any mail or documents containing your social security number before tossing it.
*Be careful of individuals posing as someone who legitimately needs your number. Always verify who they are and why they need your personal information. Also verify how they will protect your information.
*Make sure before you post your information on sites that they are secured.

What do I do if I think someone is using my Social Security Number?

If you think someone has used your social security number to open fraudulent accounts contact one of the three major credit reporting bureaus and request a copy of your report and also ask for a fraud alert to be placed on your report. This way before any new accounts are opened they will have to contact you at the number you provided them to verify you are the one opening the new account.
If you find that you have become a victim of Identity Theft take the steps to reporting it.
If someone has stolen your identity and you feel you have done all you can do to fix the problem and someone is still using your social security number you can apply for a new one.
