19th and Early 20th Century Artists Inspired by Polynesia

When we think of old paintings of Polynesia, we invariably think of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), and his Post-Impressionistic paintings of Tahiti. His beautiful and colorful depictions of Polynesian sensuality are well known throughout the world. He is by far the most famous of the artists who captured the people and landscapes of old Polynesia. But he was certainly not the only one.

John LaFarge (1835-1910) was a contemporary of Gauguin. More well known for his stained glass works, he also traveled to Tahiti and Samoa to paint, a year before Gauguin did. His works are reminiscent of Gauguin, in a similar impressionistic style. Many of his paintings record traditional tribal life in Samoa.

Theodore Wores (1859-1939) was an American artist born in San Francisco who visited Hawaii and Samoa in 1901-1902. His most famous Hawaiian artwork is The Lei Maker, which is on permanent display at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Charles W. Bartlett (1860-1940) was greatly influenced by Japanese woodblock printmakers. He used this style of printmaking to depict Hawaiian fishermen and surfers (surfing was an ancient Hawaiian sport shown in petroglyphs, and was just starting to resurface at the time). He helped to found the Honolulu Printmakers, which is still in existence today.

Arman Manookian (1904-1931) captured Hawaii in striking art-deco style, with vivid colors. Some have called him "Hawaii's Van Gogh". Tragically, he took his own life in 1931. As a result, his paintings are very rare and valuable.

The work of these and other artists can be found at Sol Pacifico Vintage Polynesian Art. Come by and visit today!
