Solar Power And Its Many Uses
Millions of miles out in the very depths of space, our sun continues to generate enough heat to warm our planet and with the help of Solar Power Systems, it can power our planet as well.
Solar power - what exactly is it?
Solar Power is in essence, radiation generated by the sun. While a large percentage of this radiation is reflected back into space before it reaches us, approximately 70% is absorbed by our planet.
Likewise, convection currents are also produced by the sun and these manifest themselves in the form of wind, which as we all know, can be devastatingly powerful. Looking at it from this point of view, it's not difficult to imagine the sheer power of our burning star, which in turn is why mankind has his sights set on being able to harness this endless supply of energy.
During the course of recent years, man has continued discovering new applications which stand to benefit from Solar Power, some of which are: -
Utility power supplies
Hot water systems
Cooling systems
Agriculture
These are just a few examples and today, more and more people are realizing the potential of solar power with regards to reducing electricity bills. For this we are truly fortunate because the days of being dependent on fossil fuels, are numbered. After all, fossil fuels are by no means a renewable source.
On the other hand, not only is solar power renewable, but it's also clean. Furthermore, there's an abundance of it and certainly enough to power the entire world. In fact, it's no longer only homeowners who are turning towards solar power, but even the electricity producing companies themselves are looking at way to capitalize on this endless source of energy.
As work continues in order to present renewable energy to the world, others are putting solar power to work and reaping the benefits of reduced utility bills. As solar power becomes more and more popular, the cost of installing such systems is becoming within reach of the average person but it's important to have a little knowledge before embarking on a course of action.
Solar power and agriculture
Apart from supplying homes with electricity, solar power presents some promising benefits to agriculture as well. As is common knowledge, plants require sunlight and while many commercial greenhouses use artificial light, natural light is by far more superior.
Likewise, Solar Power can also ensure that crops receive as much natural light as possible, thus benefiting overall crop production.
Just as they require light, plants also require heat and warmth, which of course can also be provided by means of solar power. Interestingly enough, there are already some greenhouses which have solar panels installed. Perhaps the most noticeable example of this is the Netherlands, where producers rely heavily of solar power technology.
Solar power and hot water
In many cases, natural gas is used for water heaters and while gas is certainly more cost efficient than electricity. It's certainly not as good an option as solar power. Solar Power Systems are already widely used to heat water both for residential use and commercial use. Perhaps you've had the pleasure of swimming in a heated public swimming pool in the past? Well, the chances are that it's being heated by means of solar power.
Solar power for cooling systems
Many people tend to frown when they first hear that solar power can be used for cooling but the truth is, solar power is in fact used for cooling, as is the case with solar powered air conditioners.
The applications discussed above are just the tip of the potential iceberg which is yet to be discovered and as long as man continues searching for new possibilities, solar power looks set to be with us for a very long time.
