Building a Solar Cooker

Before we get into the specific instructions, let's talk about the different types of solar cookers that you can make. Three main categories of solar cookers exist: panel, box and parabolic cookers. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

A panel cooker consists of several shiny panels, clustered around the pot. The shiny panels are angled in such a way that they all reflect sunlight onto the pot. The panel cooker is possibly the easiest and cheapest to make. Being collapsible, it can be effortlessly transported. However, it can only cook one or two pots of food. Furthermore, it cannot attain high temperatures.

A box cooker comprises of a box lined with shiny material, covered with a sheet of glass. The food is placed inside the box; then the glass lid is used to seal the air inside the box. Often, the box cooker has an additional, reflective lid, which is angled to direct sunlight into the box. Advantages of a box cooker include its ability to cook large amounts of food and its ease of construction. However, the box cooker cannot be used to fry foods.

A parabolic cooker consists of a parabolic cone, lined with reflect material. A parabola is a shape with very special properties. It is able to focus all incoming light onto one single point, known as the focal point. Because of the convergence of light energy, the focal point can attain very high temperatures. Logically, the pot of food is placed at the focal point.

The parabolic cooker can attain very high temperatures. It can cook food as fast as a conventional stovetop. On the other hand, it takes more skill and time to make. The intensity of the focused light can also harm the eyes.

Before you embark on a solar cooking project, try building these two solar cookers first: a simple box cooker, and a quasi-parabolic cooker. For the box cooker, you need: a cardboard box, tinfoil, and a sheet of glass.

Line the cardboard box with the shinier side of the tinfoil. Try to keep wrinkles to a minimum. You want the tinfoil to be as flat as possible. Otherwise the efficiency of the reflection is decreased. Place a pot of food inside the box. Lift up the lid, and place the sheet of glass over the food. Now let your solar cooker soak up the sun. The food should be cooked in a couple of hours.

For the quasi-parabolic cooker, you need: a large salad or fruit bowl, tinfoil, and a small ceramic bowl. Line the inside of the bowl with tinfoil, again keeping wrinkles to a minimum. Place the small ceramic bowl on the bottom of the larger bowl. Now balance a small pot of food on top of the ceramic bowl. This is to elevate the food to the focal point. Use this cooker at noon, when the sun is directly overhead.

Some classifications of solar technology are active, passive, direct and indirect.     Using Solar Power can definitely save you money and electric consumption. For example, Solar Pool Heater. It can easily double your swimming season or more.

    I dont think we have a lot of choice whether to go solar or not. Our normal fuels have nearly been used up. If we want to continue the lifestyle we have we will have to use solar power along with other natural sources. The information is out there to even build our own diy solar panels it's up to us to learn and use. Great lens, congrats.
