Sookie, my old friend, are you there?
While reading the newest entry(as of June 2009) in the Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris, Dead and Gone, I discovered:
My Sookie has disappeared.
Dead and Gone is really good and I enjoyed reading it to find out the latest happenings in Bon Temps. The last book was a little weird--vamps and weres holding a convention in a made up city called Rhodes--for me, but it was still what I call a "fun" read. You know the type of "read" I mean -- totally not related to any of the stresses in my everyday life.
However, in this new book, I can only see Anna Paquin's Sookie Stackhouse. This newest title seems just too much like True Blood. Now, this is not a bad thing!
It could be that Ms. Paquin has done an excellent job re-creating Ms. Harris' Sookie, or she has taken over the character as her own. Now, this is not a bad thing. In fact, I really like the HBO series. But, I do not hesitate to tell anyone that the books are not like the series. Yes, the characters have the same names, the setting the original, but the books are total fantasy. The TV series is almost too real.
The books also have an almost comic appeal. Sookie gets into impossible situations, but you are not stressed out . She is like Stephanie Plum in that way. Stuff just happens and it is kinda funny.
Am I just imagining that my Sookie is gone? Has your Sookie disappeared, too?

Just Who is Sookie Stackhouse? you ask----
The series is so intriguing, that Alan Ball (of Six Feet Under fame) created a series (True Blood) for HBO based on these novels by Ms. Harris.
Sookie is telepathic (she can "hear" what others are thinking) who seems to attract vampires, werewolves and other supes (supernaturals).

Interview with Charlaine Harris
The author of the Southern Vampire Series and creator of Sookie, speaks:
Read what Ms. Harris says about her Sookie books in an interview on "Paranormal Romance: Charlaine Harris on her Sookie Books, "True Blood" and Bill vs. Edward.
Here is one of the questions from the interview:
Q. In one podcast interview, you said you didn't see Sookie turning into a vampire or even winding up with one - in the sense that she would lead a normal life and be with a human. Do you still think she will be able to do that - settle with one person? Not a vampire?
A. I said that Sookie will never become a vampire. And a vampire can't give her what she's always thought she wanted; a regular marriage with children. But that doesn't mean Sookie will end up with exactly what she wants. I see no reason why she couldn't settle with one person.
Dead and Gone
Do You Think "True Blood" has gone to Sookie's head?
I truly enjoyed this addition to the Southern Vampire Series.
Remember, try and read the series in order. The books will make more sense to you.
The question at hand...
Is Sookie Stackhouse Dead and Gone?

All the Sookie you can read:
I advise that one reads the books in the order they were written.
Don't expect to find "True Blood" scripts here, tho.

If You Like Sookie's Series
Try the Harper Connelly Mysteries by Charlaine Harris
Boy, is this woman a writing machine! She has oh so many other series out there and not all of them are mysteries.
How Ms. Harris keeps the books unique and fresh is beyond me. Every one of her main characters has her (most are women) very own personality.
One of my favorites is the Harper Connelly Mystery series. Harper was hit by lightening when she was a teen and this unfortunate accident gave her a gift. She can find dead bodies. In a classic example of "when life gives you lemons, make lemondade" senario, Harper makes her living finding lost people who are most likely dead. What fun - not! But, it pays her bills.
This is a fascinating series. How does Harper keep doing this job? How can she have a normal life? I'll let you find out for yourself.
As with Sookie, the books will make more sense if you read them in order.
