South Sydney Rabbitohs

History

South Sydney played their first game ever at Birchgrove Oval on 20th April 1908. They played North Sydney and won 11-7. Souths went on to win the first ever premiership that year.
They went through the 1925 season undefeated, only one of six sides in history to do this. Souths were very dominant in the early years and were called 'The Pride of the League'.
Souths were most successful thoughout the 1920's - 1930's. The 1940's were not very successful and in 1946 did not win one single game. In the 1950's-1960's they were again quite successful.
In the 1970's Souths were plagued by financial problems.
In the late 70's to 80's they were successful under super coach Jack Gibson.
In the 1990's again struggled under financial pressures.
In 1999 Souths were excluded from the competition after the Super League war and the renamed NRL deciding to cut back the competition to 14 teams. Souths failed to meet the required criteria to be included in the new set-up.
2000 and 2001 were the years of legal battles to get reinstated into the competition. Souths had overwhelming support from the public and won an appeal through the courts to be reinstated.
Souths were back in business for the 2002 season.
Between 2002 and 2007 Souths struggled on the field and off.
In 2006 Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a'Court took over the club, and signed on new players and new coach Jason Taylor.
In 2007 Souths made the finals for the first time since 1989, finishing 7th.
2008 - Peter Holmes a'Court resigned as CEO.
2008 - Centenary Year
On 3rd September 2008, South Sydney was named as the National Trust's inaugural 'Community Icon' in recognition of the clubs contribution to sport and sporting culture at state and national levels.
2009 - Souths finished 10th in the competition
