If you are a traveler you would do well to learn Spanish. There are a reported 400,000 million Spanish speaking people in the world. When traveling abroad no matter where you go if the locals do not know English it is quite likely that someone will know Spanish. It is always in good taste to learn a bit of the local language so if you are going to Mexico or another Spanish speaking country it will be much easier to get around if you know the language. In the common tourist areas the locals will likely speak English however should you want to get off the beaten path and really experience the country you must learn the language to fully experience your exotic local. If you are a shopper you should know the language to get the best deals and knowledge of what you are really buying.

Spanish in the workplace is now often a requirement to further advance your career. The world is getting smaller and many companies also have factories or offices south of the border, communication skills will require you to know Spanish. The CEO will choose someone with language skills over one who does not know the local language and culture. Hospitals and other medical facilities often prefer a worker with Spanish skills due to the diversity of patients in the area. In some areas even fast food establishments prefer bilingual employees over English only employees.

Once you learn Spanish keep current and practice it daily if possible. Spend some time watching Spanish television, reading Spanish books, frequent Spanish or Mexican restaurants and converse with the employees who speak the language. Consider doing some shopping at a local Spanish specialty store to learn about the culture, foods and speak the language with the shop owner. Who knows you may find a new friend who will enrich your life.
