The Speculative Literature Foundation's mission is "to promote literary quality in speculative fiction, by encouraging promising new writers, assisting established writers, facilitating the work of quality magazines and small presses in the genre, and developing a greater public appreciation of speculative fiction."
What Does The SLF Do To Help The Speculative Fiction Genre?
- Gives grants and awards to both individuals and organizations working in the Speculative Fiction field.
- Raises the funds to provide these grants and awards to individuals and organizations that enrich the SpecFic field.
- Develops outreach and resource materials for schools and libraries.
How Does The SLF Nurture Speculative Fiction Writers & Publications?
- SLF Small Press Co-Op
- "The Speculative Literature Foundation Small Press Co-operative is an organization designed to help small presses within the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres co-operate on projects and exchange useful information."
- Technology Exchange
- A SLF program that helps connect speculative fiction writers who need a computer, printer, or other hardware with people who have these items to donate.
- SpecFic New Writer Mentorship Program
- Get market, technique and writing advice and support from a pro SF writer and fellow mentees.
What Is The Foundation's Definition Of "Speculative Literature"?

"Speculative literature is a catch-all term meant to inclusively span the breadth of fantastic literature, encompassing literature ranging from hard science fiction to epic fantasy to ghost stories to horror to folk and fairy tales to slipstream to magical realism to modern myth-making -- and more. Any piece of literature containing a fabulist or speculative element would fall under our aegis, and would potentially be work that we would be interested in supporting."
