Welcome!

If you have found your way to this site, it is highly likely that you are part of a small percentage -but in relationship to the total human population, a large number of human beings breaking through an evolutionary boundary.  Literally, it has taken us somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 billion years for this small but very significant step...to occur!

Yikes....consider that idea for awhile.

But then, Spiral Dynamics tells us that these small but very significant steps have taken place 6 other times in our known history.  It also predicts there will always be more in the future.

This lens is one of my contributions to our next small, but significant step.

In Other Words....

"At each stage of human existence the adult man is off on his quest of his holy grail; the way of life he seeks by which to live... As he sets off on each quest, he believes he will find the answer to his existence. Yet, much to his surprise and much to his dismay, he finds at every stage that the solution to existence is not the solution he has come to find. Every stage he reaches leaves him disconcerted and perplexed. It is simply that as he solves one set of human problems he finds a new set in their place. The quest is never ending."

Clare Graves (1929-1986)

Giants in the World of Spiral Dynamics

We All Stand on the Shoulders of Giants

It started when Dr. Graves, professor of psychology at Union College, became so befuddled at his fields lack of understanding of itself. Why did he teach so many models and theories of human development -- and really now, which one is right?

That dissonance motivated a 30 year, highly researched enquiry into the question; "What is the nature of a healthy, adult human?"

Dr. Don E. Beck
Friend, student and staunch supporter of Clare's research, this wise, gentle and determined warrior teaches the open minded and curious from his exceptional experiences and understanding of the human species. This link takes you to Dr. Beck's website. Stay tuned as I work on an additional lens dedicated to his development of Spiral Dynamics.
Christopher Cowen
Chris co-wrote Spiral Dynamics: Mastering Leadership, Values and Change with Don Beck. For more than 10 years the two worked and taught together as co-founders of the National Values Center. Today Chris and Don work independently. Chris has chosen to nurture "the roots" of Spiral Dynamics by tending to the restoration of Clare Graves original research and writing.
Ken Wilber
Ken has an impressive collection of books he has written based in a central tenet that "everybody is right." Ken created his own model of how all the theories fit together, simply called AQAL for All Quadrant- All Levels. Ken and Don connected when Ken was creating the Integral Institute due to the naturally fits of each others work. Currently, Ken is building the Integral Multiplex.
Spiral Dynamics 2- The Constellation
Here is a future of Spiral Dynamics. This lens helps you to find the knowledgeable and practiced individuals who are actively applying Spiral Dynamics to the existential problems of our time. who also are contributing back the source work, by adding additional value and knowledge.

Spiral Dynamics Is:

"An unfolding, emergent, oscillating, spiraling process marked by progressive subordination of older, lower-behavior systems to newer, higher-order systems as man's existential problems change." -Clare W. Graves
  • Complex Adaptive intelligence codes within us that respond to our life conditions.
  • Organizing Codes and Principles - The Psychosocial "DNA".
  • An Integrative Model of Human Biology, Psychology, Culture and Social Systems.
  • A Multi-dimensional Model of Change Dynamics.
  • A comprehensive view of understanding why and how humans think.
  • A five deep rendering of human activity (Life Conditions, Codes, Ways of Thinking, Systems, Behavior).
  • An Evolutionary Model.
  • An Intelligent Design of Life.
  • Scalable from Individuals to Families to Organizations to Cities to Nations and beyond.

Spiral Dynamics Is NOT:

  • A typing system.
  • A box to put people in.
  • A label to identify people.
  • Easy, although it is simple.
  • THE Truth, and it contains truth.

Suggestions on how to learn about the Spiral

A pathway to a complex world

Spiral Dynamics integral, for many, is a window into a very different understanding of and thinking about the world around us. Learning the Spiral can be vehicle from which you explore, through a new lens, the world around you.

It's akin to looking at humanity through a microscope and a macroscope at the same time.

The very looking of which can be an instrument of change.

How to Use Spiral Dynamics in the "Real World"

Problem Solving, Change and Transformation

Spiral Dynamics can help you to think better about emergent processes by addressing these questions:
  1. IF it is time for change, then change FROM what TO what?
  2. And IF it is time for change, then which of the Seven Variations of Change is appropriate?
  3. Finally, to connect it all together, ask: How should Who Manage (lead, teach, etc.) Whom to do What, and When?
  4. Use Spiral Dynamics to communicate with people in ways they understand best on their terms, not yours. " Use Spiral Dynamics to motivate people in ways that matter to them, at this time, in this place.
  5. Use Spiral Dynamics to construct organizations that align the work to be done, the people who will be doing it, the management that fits those people, and the technologies that apply naturally. In other words: Get the system right before trying to make the styles Fit. Seek out the natural by using a Spiral Dynamics framework.
  6. Spiral Dynamics explores the core intelligences and deep values that flow beneath what we believe and do. The result is a dynamic model of emergent thinking systems -- how values arise and spread, why people make decisions in different ways, and what to do with those differences to create positive energy.
  7. LIKE genes, memes do not operate in solo, but interlock in the mosaics that form Weltanschauungs, worldviews." -- Howard Bloom in The Lucifer Principle
