Stephen Hillenburg was born in August, 1961 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He went to Savanna High school, then went to Humbolt State University and got a degree in natural resource planning and interpretation,he also got a degree in Marine Biology. After that he taught Marine Biology at Orange County Ocean Institute. A few years later he went back to school at the California Institute of Fine Arts and got a master of fine arts degree in animation. He has made many short films, some of them have even won awards. One year while at a film festival he met Joe Murry (creator of Rocko's Modern Life). Joe wanted Stephen to be a director on Rocko's Modern life. Stephen happily accepted the job. When the show ended in 1996 he began making comic books about a sea sponge. After a couple of comics he changed the sea sponge into a square kitchen sponge. Stephen showed one of his friends (also one of the writers on Rocko's Modern Life) his comics, He told Stephen he should make his comics into a cartoon series. Stephen rounded up some people from Rocko's Modern Life to help him make a pitch to send to Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon loved Stephen's idea. The first show of Spongebob played right after the 1999 Kids choice awards and has been going strong ever since.

Here are some fun facts about the characters.

Spongebob is a fun loving sponge who lives in a pineapple! He loves to go jelly fishing and blow bubbles with Patrick. He also loves working at the Krusty Krab. He has a pet snail named Gary!

Patrick is Spongebob's best friend! Patrick lives under a rock. He also loves to go jelly fishing and blowing bubbles with Spongebob. But one of Patrick's most favorite things to do is to sleep!

Squidward is Spongebob's neighbor. Squidward does not like Spongebob. He works at the Krusty Krab with Spongebob. He hates his job and he hates living next to Spongebob. Pretty much the only thing he does like is to play his clarinet.

Mr. Krabs is the founder and owner of the Krusty Krab. He lives in an anchor with his daughter Pearl. Mr. Krabs loves money.

Mrs. Puff tries to teach Spongebob how to drive a boat mobile! Every time Spongebob crashes the boat Mrs. Puff puffs up and her voice gets really low.

Sandy is a very smart Texas squirrel (wonder how that happened)! She lives in a fresh air dome.

Plankton is Mr. Krabs' business rival. He is very small. Plankton is the founder and owner of the Chum Bucket. And he went to college!
