Sprinkler Repair and Lawn Maintenance Tips

Ranked #11,866 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #168,045 overall

When it comes to maintaining our lawns and gardens, the concept of "keeping up with the Joneses" never rang truer!

Many neighborhoods have behind-the-scenes wars going on for who can have the most pristine lawn on the block, and when a sprinkler system goes bad, it can wreak havoc on the homeowner's ego - and wallet!

A sprinkler system is mechanical, and we all know mechanical things break down, so even though you might get lucky and have your system outlive you, chances are you'll eventually discover a minor (or major) Sarasota sprinkler repair that needs your attention.

The problem is - how do you handle it?

Do you whip out the Yellow Pages and let your fingers do the walking until you find a reputable sprinkler repair professional? Or do you put on your do-it-yourself homeowner's hat and learn how to tackle this type of project yourself?

There are pros and cons to both sides.  Yes, you'll pay some out of pocket expenses for a professional's experience, but it might be worth it if you abhor sprinkler repair from the do it yourself angle.

A professional can diagnose your problem quickly, locate the parts, and handle the dangerous mix of water and electricity.  But you don't want to have to call a pro out every time something causes a problem with your lawn sprinkler!

It's better to use simple instructions that make lawn sprinkler repair easy for the average homeowner.  There are books, websites, and even sprinkler repair DVDs that walk you through every step.

You'll be getting access to free information on the 'net, and even if you buy a product, it'll be a one-time investment instead of having to shell out money every time you need assistance.

Some people get so into their lawns that they take it one step further, launching their own lucrative business to help other homeowners achieve the perfect South Florida irrigation system.  Click Here for Sarasota sprinkler systems

Tips on Keeping Your Sprinkler System Running Smoothly

After the initial installation, your Sarasota irrigation system should run smoothly and allow you to maintain the kind of lawn grass you're seeking. Your decisions before the installation will be on what type of system is best for your lawn, along with what options there are for merging your landscaping ideas with issues like water conservation.

You may run into some minor repairs, but if you keep your sprinkler system in fine repair, you won't have to get a whole new lawn irrigation system at all. Like many outdoor devices, you want to pay special attention to how well your sprinkler system endures weather conditions.

In the Spring, you'll want to start using your sprinkler system to help bring the new greenery to life in your front and backyard landscaping. You don't want to start using it if there's danger of a frost occurring.

Or, if it's been a rainy season, you may not need to use your sprinkler until later in the year. You want it to be functioning properly before the harsh heat affects your landscaping designs.

Your best defense against a major repair is to keep an eye out for potential damage to your sprinkler system.

When you turn the valve on, you want to see if there's any leakage so you can repair small breaks instead of encountering a massive leak in your yard one day.

If your irrigation system is on batteries, make sure you replace them when necessary. See if any of the sprinkler heads are leaky and make sure each one waters the lawn with the right amount of liquid.

Don't let grass and weeds overcome your sprinkler heads. Keep the area trim or your sprinkler won't operate well. Eventually, the season will end and you'll need to protect your sprinkler system from the chill of winter.
You really only need to worry about external sprinkler parts that are above ground. You'll want to turn off the valve to the sprinkler and attach an air compressor to the blowout port. Empty all water from the bleed ports on the backflow device and turn off the compressor. Don't forget to turn the timer off!

If you run into any problems or confusion, don't hesitate to seek solid advice from an irrigation repair specialist who can help you find the solution you need.

"How Much Should I Water My Lawn?"

The answer to this question primarily depends on what type of landscaping you have. The type of grass and soil your land contains will affect the amount of water you supply it with in the Spring and Summer months.

Like any living thing, your lawn needs air, water, and nutrients to survive, and with a perfect balance, it will thrive and develop into the lush greenery you want to see out of your window.

If you water too much, your soil drowns the grass because the roots can't access any dry air. If you deprive your lawn of the amount of water it needs, then its roots will die of dehydration, or go dormant until the next season when it will hope to receive the water it needs to properly develop.

As the homeowner, you'll want to check your lawn to see how it's utilizing the water supply you deliver. If you want to use a high-tech tool like an electronic sensor, then you can check the soil that way. Or, use your hand and dig up a small sample down to the roots to see how much moisture is in the ground.

If you're easily able to get a sample of soil, then it's not too dry. If you have a hard time reaching the depth of the roots, then you may need to increase your water supply.

You may want to check various area of your lawn. If you find one spot that's watered properly and another that's either not getting enough water or is too saturated, then you'll want to check your irrigation system to see if your sprinkler has a leak or clogged valve. An Sarasota irrigation repair specialist can guide you in checking your system for optimal performance.

Your watering schedule may need to change with the temperatures. If it's unusually hot and dry, then you can provide more water to your lawn. If it's cool and cloudy, with lots of humidity in the air, then you might be able to cut back on the amount of lawn watering you do that day or week.

You either have a leak (check behind the shrubs for a broken stand pipe) or the solenoid valve diaphragm is bad.
