Stay Organized with a Calendar for Your Future SquidCasts

SquidCasts have the potential of bringing visitors to your lens, but they are often used inefficiently and ineffectively. I have found that squidcasts are most effective when there is some incident that prompted the cast to be sent.

Plan your SquidCasts in advance on a calendar and let your SquidCast Calendar remind you of when to send a SquidCast for a particular lens.

You can also use this calendar to remember when to tweet about a lens. Toss in a hashtag and you're on your way to traffic.

What is a SquidCast Calendar?

The premise is simple, whenever you make a lens, add a few dates to your calendar - dates upon which it would be appropriate to make a SquidCast.

After you have made an amazing SquidWho lens, you may forget about their birthday, or the anniversary of an important date in their life, but they are great days to SquidCast that lens. With a SquidCast calendar, you'll remember.

What is a SquidCast?

Squidcasts are announcements made by you about a particular lens (OR SQUIDOO GROUP!) that goes out to all who have joined your fan club or favorited the lens. For more information on Squidcasts, visit these helpful pages:

Squidcasting is THE way to let people within squidoo know your new lens exists. You can use it in all kinds of ways - but how do you do it without annoying people?

Calendar Programs

To Maintain Your Squidcast Calendar

There are several ways to keep a Squidcast Calendar. Find what works best for you and go with it.

There are calendar programs set up that you can use to easily organize your future squidcast topics like Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, or Yahoo Calendar. These can actually send you a reminder to send a squidcast!

You could also create a calendar in Word.  A running list, in order by date, works just fine too. Some people even prefer the good old fashioned handwritten calendar or day planner. Whatever floats your boat.

How you keep your calendar is just a matter of preference and convenience, so find your groove and go with it.

You Might Be Surprised There's A Holiday

Everyday is a Holiday

National Mustard Day? Vinyl Record Day? National Iced Tea Month? Ball Point Pen Day? National Chestnut Week? World Wide Knit In Public Day?

If you have a lens, you can probably bet that there is some relative day, week, or month, to celebrate it or raise awareness. Browse through the lists, and add to your calendar relative holidays and the lens they coorespond with (so you don't forget why you put Maple Syrup Day on the calendar!).

Sneek Peak at Some of My SquidCast Calendar

(2008)

These are just a few things I have on my SquidCast Calendar, so you can to get an idea for how simple and handy a list like this can be. I added these items to my SquidCast Calendar the day I published the corresponding lens. With this little list, I can remember to come back to it on this date. Without a calendar, it is possible (more like probable) that I will miss days that could create interest in an otherwise stagnant lens.

Squidcasts based on important dates are a great way to breathe life back into a lens that has fallen by the wayside. Perhaps you haven't done much on it lately, but with a reminder you have a reason to update it and squidcast it.

50 Ways To Use Squidcasting

One of our Giant Squid Organizers bdkz has put together a great list of ways to use squidcasts.

The Possibilities are Endless

Ideas for Adding to Your SquidCasting Calendar

  • If you have a lens on strawberries, put on the calendar the time of year it is best to plant strawberries, the time of year they are ready, and date of the California Strawberry Festival (or any other state - you don't have to actually live there, to let people know about it)
  • If you have a lens on the eighties, add a few important dates to your list - like the anniversary of the day Michael Jackson's hair caught fire, or Baby Jessica fell in the well, or Ozzy bit the head off a bat. Remind them of this event, and ask them to take a walk down memory lane and remember other events of the eighties.
  • If you have a local or city lens lens, be sure to add an annual event or tradition to the calendar. Add a photo or news coverage of the event, and SquidCast for the community. We may not be able to go to the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, but we may like to learn about it. You may be able to get visitors who are interested in the topic of the event more than your city, and then you can introduce them to your city.

SquidCast Calendar Tips

Things to Remember When Squidcasting

  • Don't overdo it. Do not squidcast the same thing over and over. Change your calendar periodically. You will cease to have fans if you are repetitive repetitive, or if you announce every time you fart.

  • If you don't have anything to say, don't say anything at all. Look around, there is certainly some reason you can find to SquidCast something. Search the news, ask a question, whatever. Just make sure there is a reason you are squidcasting. Think of it as a press release (since it pretty much is one).

  • You don't have to Squidcast EVERYTHING that you put on your calendar. It is a guide, not a mandate. If you squidcasted on that lens yesterday, then let it go. It will be there on the calendar next year, catch that item then.

  • Don't limit yourself to the calendar. Having a calendar is no excuse to not watch the news on your issues, and to not react spontaneously to the events happening around you. Go with your gut.

This concept can be carried over to Tweets, too - You can use the same calendar system. Where Squidcasts will only reach Squidoo registered users, Tweets have the potential of reaching a larger audience. In fact, with some of the new Twitter applications, you can even schedule your tweets up to a year in advance ... so even if you forget, you'll still tweet about your lens.

Very interesting! I've just been casting when I make a new lens, or when I change something in a lens, which has meant some have stagnated. I'd better get myself a calendar sorted out! Thanks!
