Are you in a Squidoo group?

There are all kinds of Squidoo groups out there. Some are online (outside of the Squidoo site) and others are AT the Squidoo site.

Squidoo used to have a lot more of these kinds of groups. They decided to close some of them before I came to Squidoo. But there still are some good groups left.

In this lens, I am first listing the groups online outside of the Squidoo site. There are many groups online. My suggestion is to look at each one, and decide which ones to join. You can join as few as one group, and as many as ALL the groups. But remember, you must usually fill out a profile for each one as part of the sign-in process.

You can also choose to be as active or inactive as you want on all the groups; but if you make an effort to email others and comment on their lenses, or just the weather (!), it can help you make friends and reciprocal visits to YOUR lenses as well, which is a good thing.

I will list all the best groups I can find to help everyone get connected. It's a great way to spread the word about your Squidoo lenses, get help, find out information, and get pointers from lots of Squidoo lensmasters!

Joining a Squidoo group can really help you.

It can help you become a Giant Squid!

Squidoo groups online (outside of the Squidoo site)

These are groups for Squidoo Lensmasters

I found these online and from tips here on Squidoo too. Joining these groups may well increase your lens readership. Plus, you will be learning from other lensmasters and even a Giant Squid or two!

For groups ON Squidoo, just scroll down to that section.
The Squid Log Network
This group used to be Professional Squids. Then it switched to a 10-Finity group. Their description "The SquidLog Network is a social networking site for the Squidoo Lensmaster community..."

This group has 182 members so far. I plan to join soon too.
From The Lensmaster Lounge - Squidoo groups suggested by Mystic Mama!
Here is a big list of groups. The Ning groups are mostly gone, now, but you MIGHT be able to find one that has not been deleted by Ning. The other ones look interesting! Let me know if you find one you like.
Valley of the Giants
Written by Giant Squids. If you are already a Giant Squid, you can also contribute. I am working on becoming a Giant Squid. I have several new lenses to make first.
The Squidoo Authors Twitter Group
You join this group from the webpage, clicking on "Join Group". You must be a Twitter user first.
The KC Stargazer Squidoo Group Blog
This group has KC actually reviewing selected lucky lenses. There is a lot here I have yet to explore. It did look interesting though!

Why join a Squidoo group?

Because you can learn from each one.

A little about Squidoo groups AT Squidoo

Here are the Squidoo groups you have probably heard about.

These groups (the ones here on the Squidoo site - NOT the online ones) were probably mostly started by the "Old Hands" here on Squidoo. You can't always find these by a straight Squidoo search. The better groups are still around, because they were all reviewed by experts here at Squidoo. I will be adding more groups as I find them.

You can find out more about Squidoo Groups (AT Squidoo) at the The History of Squidoo's Group Changes section. It is next on this lens. This section explains that there used to be many groups on Squidoo, and now there aren't as many. It also explains why.

The History of Squidoo's Group Changes on the Squidoo site.

Here is the scoop on what Squidoo is doing about the groups that used to be here, and available in search on the site.

There is also a debate site (the last link) where you can join in and give your opinion on how YOU think Squidoo should handle their groups. It is actually a Squidoo lens.
Squidophile's explanation of Squidoo changes (2009) in their groups.
"The powers that be at Squidoo have announced that some serious changes will be made to the way groups are managed at Squidoo.com. If you have not already read Kimberly's post on the SquidU Review, it has plenty of detail about the current changes, and more to come in the near future."
A Guide to Squidoo Groups Changes - Part Two
This blog entry explains more about the changes that happened to Squidoo groups. It is from April 12, 2009. It points to the next link, Making Groups Great, which explains that there will be NO new groups on Squidoo; and the ones already there will be the only ones allowed.
Making Groups Great - outlining the rules for OLD groups (no NEW groups allowed now ON Squidoo)
I am glad to have this information. I had not thought of making a group here, but when I was searching for Groups online, I did not find any, so thought they weren't available here.

But they are. All (the best) groups that were on Squidoo before the changes (in 2009) are still here at Squidoo. Just scroll down just below this section to see them.
A blog article about the closure of Squidoo Groups
"R.I.P Squidoo Groups" by Lewis.
Squidoo Groups (AT Squidoo) Closed - what do you think about that?
This Squidoo lens talks about the changes that Squidoo made to its own groups (Squidoo Groups ON Squidoo). Here is a place where you can put YOUR opinion about it, and what changes you might suggest to Squidoo about it. I think this is a good idea, because as you know, sometimes rules and policies change. So put what you think on this lens and read about what other people think.

Lenses that talk about Groups

Some of these lenses USED to be groups, but now are lenses that use Plexos or lists.

These are the groups that made the cut at Squidoo. Not everyone can join each group lens. And right now, no NEW groups can be made. So if you want to make your OWN Squidoo group, you can always go to Ning, Blogger, or Wordpress to make it.

LensImprovement Central - this lens, called "Pimp My Lens" gives hints on how to improve your lenses. You can vote on top lenses and also see the avatars for many top lensmasters. The lensmaster who made this lens, KC Stargazer, now has her own group blog online that is really seems more of a true group site to me. The link is in the Squidoo Groups Online section on this lens. (Just scroll up to the beginning of this lens to go there.)

Tropical Fish Headquarters lens depends on the lensmaster to OK each lens shown here, which must be G-rated and pertain to tropical fish. But there are the usual modules where people can comment and also submit their group to be reviewed.

The Lens Headquarters Tips is a lens of special interest to people who wonder what the old Groups on Squidoo pages used to look like. It is for people who already have Groups on Squidoo who have been OK'd. I am including this because I find it fascinating to see the old group information.

Squidoo Groups AT Squidoo are listed right below here.

These are the REAL Squidoo groups that are still at Squidoo.

Here is the Squidoo Groups on Squidoo section. It features the Groups history, rule changes, and groups that are still here on Squidoo.

How do you tell a Squidoo Group? Its address is not like a "regular" lens. It has the word "group" in it. A regular lens might be called http://www.squidoo.com/example, but a group would have the address: http://www.squidoo.com/groups/example.

Official Squidoo Groups AT Squidoo

Here are some AT Squidoo Groups I have found that I like. I have omitted Groups that only seem like ultra-long lists, with no fun art or other modules in them.

To perhaps get on this list, suggest it on a comment. I am only putting the highest-quality AT Squidoo Groups here on my list.

I hope you like them too! And a big thanks for suggestions from Kimberly Dawn Wells, who wrote the guide above called Making Groups Great - outlining the rules for OLD groups (no NEW groups allowed now ON Squidoo) in the History Section (just scroll up to see this link.)

I just noticed something - it seems like a lot of the popular REAL AT Squidoo groups have Headquarters as part of their Group Lens title. Hmmmmm!

squidoo still has groups? for some reason I was thinking they did away with that.....
I do belong to some on ning, all owned by Bonnie I believe.

They did away with some groups, but there are others still left. I am also on some of the Ning groups.

I'm a group owner but I have been away from squidoo for some while now. I'm trying to figure out if people can still apply to be in the group. Any information you have would be great. Thanks for your hel

Hi! Which group are you a group owner for? I am thinking that you are still the owner until somebody else wants to be an owner, and you OK that. Also, there has been a change in Ning groups (if that is the kind of group you have). They are no longer free. Some group owners are paying a fee. Let me know what happens! Thanks for writing a comment here too. :-)

It's unfortunate that many of the Squidoo Nings that are listed here are now closed and many of the other ones are by invite only.
  • lizziebeth Feb 28, 2011 @ 10:52 am | delete
I will go to check each one, Windy! And put down who to contact. Thanks for letting me know! :-)
