My Squidoo Table of Contents

Ranked #25,530 in Education, #489,298 overall

The "Lensography" of Captain_Squid !

I began this page long before the term "lensography" was coined .. not that I got any credit for that! It's a Table of Contents. I'm almost as sure Squidoo users know what that is as I am that the general public has no idea what "lens" or "lensmaster" or "lensography" mean.

I eventually opted for a simple local HTML file. That didn't repeatedly overflow my browser cache, and actually served my purposes far better than an online list would, but I'm gonna try again ...

My goal here is clear communication, not to see how many squidiotic made-up words I can use. So here are my pages, organized into somewhat coherent groupings with a little commentary besides.

Why Build a Table of Contents?

"We Can Help You Find What You're Looking For"

Early in my Squidoodling career I decided against building a "Table of Contents" page. It just seemed so redundant, and would obviously require a lot of maintenance. What was I thinking!

if you've taken the plunge and joined Squidoo, you can probably find your lenses on the Squidoo "dashboard" if you have relatively few (say less than 10) The more you write, the harder it becomes to find them, as they are by default arranged in "lensrank" order, which fluctuates wildly every day.

This page will always be subject to revision, but once I get it "completed," it should be reasonably up-to-date, at least most of the time. For the very latest of my ramblings, you can always consult:

Captain Squid's Lenses of Doom.

Captain_Squid ! "Squidcasts"

Squidutils.com syndicates all the Squidcasts (short messages to users) you send, so you can republish them on Squidoo using the RSS module. Look under "Lensmaster Feeds."

I don't send many, since when abused they're just one more irritating source of spam. However, if you "favorite" one of my pages or Join My Fan Club you may find an occasional notice on your Squidoo Dashboard under the "Favorites" tab when I publish a new page or make major revisions to one.

My recent Squidcasts are listed below:

Squidoo for Beginners

Who Else?

Remember the self-referential Seinfeld episodes where Jerry and George were pitching "a show about nothing?" Well Squidoo is very much a site about itself. The Squidoo Tips Topic is a never-ending source of fascination, since Squidoo is designed for beginners and thrives on "new blood."

There are a lot of very popular "how-to" lenses for beginners, and if you're just starting you should consider writing one. Even though the Squidoo interface is pretty self-explanatory documentation is practically non-existant and pages of screen-shots walking newbies through the process seem to get plenty of traffic.

Even if you're just starting to Squidoodle, you can gather your thoughts for your own reference, and possibly for those you may recruit later. Don't forget there's a $5 bonus for you and anyone you sign up once they earn $15 in total royalties. (If they ever do.)

My Penguin Group Index @ Squidoo

An Index to My Penguin Group Pages

You might wonder why I've concentrated so heavily on Penguin Publishers. That's a fair question. Other than the fact that I really do like Penguin books, it goes back to one of Squidoo's earlier bright ideas -- co-branded groups. You might notice that the URLs of these pages are in the "penguingroup" subdirectory. That has potentially advantageous implications with searchengines.

I had no idea at the time that Squidoo would wind up abandoning the scheme in mid-implementation creating Orphan Groups. I still can't believe it, but I'm not maligning anyone because I respect them so much. (It's in the terms of service agreement. You might actually read this one! )

American Girl For Grownups

Read / Write a Review of this page.

I've been featuring American Girl® products since at least 1999, and customers (and their daughters) seem to love them!

This is the one "American Girl" page that isn't interlinked with the rest. It features the American Girl Series Teacher's Editions and other grown-up things. The individual historical character pages and the "Meet the American Girls" index were intended more for younger readers, which is tricky since the target audience ranges from 4 to 13.

Editors' Listmania Lists

The Editors of Amazon.com prepare Listmania® recommendations on a variety of subjects, and I've screenscraped the links and resyndicated them with links to social bookmarks. ( I first discovered in Squidoo because I was interested in RSS technology.)

It's fine to say "Everybody's an expert at something," but these recommendations are from actual acknowledged experts, and from Amazon customers who have been voted to the top.

I went a little overboard with RSS on this one, learning what various third-party services could do. These feeds are screen-scraped from Amazon "feature" pages, which aren't available via AWS. They are basically "static" (i.e. the content doesn't change), or "evergreen" -- the preferred term in Web 2.0 circles.

Current Amazon "Top Five" Lists

Amazon.com once published a list of RSS feeds on a page that has since been discontinued. My research into the ins and outs of RSS is what brought me to Squidoo in the first place, and the RSS module remains my #1 favorite.

These "Top Ten" lists were originally based on those feeds with my Amazon associates ID added via FeedBurner. I've learned a lot about RSS since, and these are all in the process of being upgraded.

Amazon.com

I'm an avid Amazon associate, and after some trial and error, I've discovered a few tricks of the trade. I've also learned to keep them to myself. I'm a lot more interested in sales than in showing off what I know, as are all of the really successful associates you will find.

I will tell you this: Most of what you read at the Amazon Associates Forum is erroneous, outdated, or just plain BalderdaSh.

I've never quite been sure what distinguishes a blog from a regular webpage. Timeliness seems to have something to do with it, but that doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule.

Anyway, here are some of the things I've been working on lately...
