You Can Add Music to Your Lenses!

Have you ever wondered about adding some music to your lenses? Have you been fretting about how to do this?

Well, fret no more, as there is an easy and fun way that you can now spice up the mood of your lenses.

This is a step by step guide showing how you can add your favorite songs, or add music to complement the subject of your lens or lenses. I would suggest reading everything first (there's not too much - honestly!) and then using the video links to create your music.

Okay, let's get started!

First Things First

Setting Up Your Accounts

If you don't already have them, the first thing to do is to set up accounts at both the Clearspring and Playlist websites. All you need to do is enter your e-mail address and then choose a username and password. Quick and easy!

Both sites are free to join, and you will find with Clearspring that there are a lot of things that you can add to your Squidoo lenses that you never thought possible before.

When working to create your music widget, I would suggest having both websites open at the same time (in two windows or tabs).

Working With Playlist.com

Once you have created both your Clearspring and Playlist accounts, your first step will be to log into Playlist.

I have created a short video capture (4 minutes) showing you the steps for choosing your songs or music, and then adding them to a play list. Please watch the video to its conclusion, as this will give you the full instructions needed.

Please note: There is NO sound with the video. Just watch the movement of the cursor and this will show you in easy steps what you need to know.

Here is the video link: Instructions For Creating a Play List

Important: When selecting your music tracks, ensure that those you have chosen are correct, by listening to them. In addition, make sure the track you have chosen is the full length. You can double check this by looking at the run time and also by listening to it.

I will add some screen captures, if feedback to the video shows that they are required.

Working With Clearspring

At the end of the Playlist instructional video you will have seen a code (the embed code), which you now need to copy and paste into your Clearspring account. First, log in to Clearspring...

Again, I have created a video, which shows how you can add the music to your lens from Clearspring. Please note that Clearspring calls your creations "widgets".

Here is the video link: Instructions For Creating a Clearspring Music Widget. Again, there is NO sound. Just follow the movement of the cursor.

As the video ends, you will see that you are asked to click on the "Continue" button. Go ahead and do this. Once you have clicked, you will be taken to the lens you have chosen the music to be added to - in edit mode. This will allow you to move the music module to wherever you wish it to be placed within your lens.

I would suggest moving the module to somewhere near the top of your lens, and offering an option to visitors to stop the music playing by clicking on the pause button. Some visitors love the music, but others don't like it -- so give them the choice ;)

In the set up, you can also opt to choose manual play.

Important Notices...

Things to Remember

1. DO NOT delete your music widget from your Clearspring account if it is already included in your lens. This may cause problems with that module. ALWAYS delete the music module first.

2. Don't go wild adding music widgets to all your lenses. I would advise only adding them to those lenses that might benefit from it, such as Video Showcases or lenses about a particular artist or music genre.

3. Your Clearspring account allows you to add widgets to your lenses that you may not have thought possible. I have found that you can add many things that offer an "embed code", but you will have to experiment. Some things still do not work, particularly if they are widgets that have the I-Frame code.

4. If you are an Amazon Associate (Affiliate) or an eBay Affiliate, many of the widgets they provide can now be added to your lenses using a Clearspring account.

Hi, you might point out that it is possible to add your OWN music to a playlist - I just did it - it's a little buggy (sometimes it says three times in a row there's an error with the URL and the fourth time it works). Go to advanced search and into the search box put the url of the mp3 song on your server. Hah!

Many many thanks for this information. ...lots of possibilities with clearspring.

I can't listen to music from playlist.com as I'm in the Uk and copyright law restricts it's use here. I did manage to get music on one of my lenses using clearspring and goear. It works perfectly and it's a nice neat player.

Bonnie...thank you ever so much. Your screencast videos made all the difference in figuring it out. I think it was even better than having simple written instructions. It was like having you right beside me. I'm working on focusing on movie soundtracks goiing forward and this is the perfect applications.
