Squidoo Directories Are A Great Source For Backlinks
If you aren't submitting your lens to directories, you are missing out on a bunch of traffic from lensmasters that use these to find new and interesting lenses.
You are also missing out on something else just as valuable. These directories provide backlinks. A backlink is a link on a web page that links back to your site.
If your new to trying to generate traffic to a webpage, you may be asking why these are so important. You want these backlinks because some search engines such as Google use the number of links going to your site as a part of their ranking of your site. The search engines assume that the more links found across the web pointing to your site the more important and popular your site is.
I will help you with getting the right kind of links and how to get them. There are a few tricks to doing it right.
You Want Good Quality Backlinks
Backlinks From Relevant Sites Are Best
You have to be careful about building your backlinks. The search engines want to see the links on relevant sites. By that I mean sites that have something in common with your site such as a similar topic.
Squidoo directories help you with this relevancy issue. These directories are specifically for squidoo lenses or in some cases anything web page about squidoo and the links on these sites are listed by category, so the page your link is on will be relevant by being squidoo related and by the topic.
Build Your Links Naturally
Add Backlinks Slowly
The search engines also take notice when you add links back to your lens if you add too many at once. This isn't a good thing though. They frown on this sort of activity. Google and Yahoo and the rest of them know that a site gains popularity slowly. Very rarely does a sites fan base skyrocket overnight.
You need to add a one or two here and there. Put aside a few minutes a week to add your lens to a directory or two. If you have a number of places you are trying to get backlinks for, you can do one or two lenses a day and rotate them so that you don't add too many too quickly for any particular lens.
Doing it this way takes a bit of time, but you will slowly build your rank solidly with the major search engines.
