Hi Christene, thanks for helping us (esp. the newbies) in understanding more about hos Squidoo works.

My question is, how does Squidoo determine a rank ? Based on people reading it or the quality ? If there is a link to this topic, please do let me know.

Again, being a newbie, there is so many topics to cover and I am now a little bit confused on where to look !! haha .....

  • Christene May 4, 2012 @ 1:29 pm | delete

  • MeltedGlass Apr 25, 2012 @ 7:17 am | delete
I have a question about Royalties. I just checked one of my older Lenses and there's a single entry in Royalties dated 12/14/2011, and it says Cash: $0.44.

I'm just wondering where this came from, since it isn't in earnings, and I don't remember any of my modules actually selling anything. :O
  • Christene Apr 25, 2012 @ 9:09 am | delete
That was the amount for a Tier 3 lens including AdPool, Text Links, and Chitika for the 12/14/11 payday. ($0.33 + $0.10 + $0.01).

It shows up as a single figure on the Royalties Tab for 12/14/2011. You'll see the breakdown on the Earnings Tab under the date 10/31/2011 (three lines).

This money was earned in October and paid out in December.

Very helpful - pinned to my board especially for Squids.
  • Siclone Apr 21, 2012 @ 9:05 pm | delete
Does a lens have to stay within a tier for the entire month? What happens if it keeps dropping in and out of a tier?
  • Christene Apr 22, 2012 @ 1:27 am | delete
It can fluctuate a bit. It's based on the average of the whole month, measured up against all other lenses on Squidoo. 2,000 lenses with the highest average, get a tier 1 payment, for example.
  • Siclone Apr 22, 2012 @ 1:33 am | delete
Thanks. I've only been doing this a few days so I still have a lot to learn!

I am a little confused, what is the pay pal deposit? I am still getting used to this.
  • Christene Apr 6, 2012 @ 8:19 pm | delete
You need to have a PayPal account for Squidoo to pay you. https://www.paypal.com We get our earnings once a month.
  • Bhagya6Rekha Apr 7, 2012 @ 12:50 am | delete
I have my paypal account that is same on the file. from last three months payday details are not being displayed on my dashboard (that is the blue rectangle box with the details of payments on every month). so how can i know that what is the payment of mine? what is the position of my payments..
please let me know, I am thinking that it would be nice to delete my squidoo account. answer me please.
  • Christene Apr 7, 2012 @ 3:25 am | delete
Your lenses aren't ranked high enough to earn tier payments. If you haven't made any sales you won't see a payment at all. Sorry you are struggling with it. :(

Thank you for such clear, helpful information. I noticed today that a couple of my lenses have finally been breaking into higher rankings (24,000 range) and decided to find out what that meant. Now I know. The bonus is that you also revealed how that rank translates into earnings. Again, thank you.

  • pokeyoat Jan 12, 2012 @ 4:45 pm | delete
Do you know if there was a "fourth tier payment" for the last two months? I've noticed that I have the infolinks earnings (the same as were reported for tier 3 lenses) on some of lenses without any adpool earnings.
Thank you in advance, and thank you for such an amazing lens!
  • Christene Jan 12, 2012 @ 7:58 pm | delete
It's not a 4th tier. Lenses that are opted out of infolinks give their spots to lower ranked lenses. That's what you're seeing. I love when that happens. :)
  • servantoftheLord Jan 10, 2012 @ 3:12 pm | delete
I got an email that someone bought something on Amazon by clicking through my lens. How long will it take for the amount to show up in the $$$ column . . . does it not appear until the month I am to get paid for it?
  • Christene Jan 10, 2012 @ 4:15 pm | delete
The item has to ship first. You should see it in a few days.
  • leeleon Jan 10, 2012 @ 7:29 am | delete
I am a newbie. i can get payment from squidoo for my lens although there is many grammar mistakes and less squidlikes?
  • Christene Jan 10, 2012 @ 4:14 pm | delete
The only thing that matters is your lensrank. If it's high enough you'll get a tier payment. You can also make sales.
  • edecas Jan 9, 2012 @ 2:57 pm | delete
Thank you for this. Still a little confusing, but certainly the best info on tiers and payouts

Thanks for shedding some light especially on Squidoo's tiering system.
  • khakigirl Dec 31, 2011 @ 11:06 pm | delete
Wow, it's really pretty depressing that it takes up to 3 months to get payment for something you did. I thought it was the month after. Why do they wait so long to pay? Is it to prevent over-payment or something?
  • Christene Jan 1, 2012 @ 12:35 am | delete
They can't pay us until Amazon, eBay, AdSense, et al. pay them.
  • khakigirl Jan 1, 2012 @ 8:04 am | delete
Adsense pays within 30 days and I believe almost all other affiliate networks do too.
  • Christene Jan 1, 2012 @ 4:01 pm | delete
No, Amazon is 60 days. Two months after the fact. Same as Squidoo. We get paid for December in February.
  • khakigirl Jan 1, 2012 @ 5:54 pm | delete
Okay, that makes sense. I've read on other lenses that you don't get paid for the first month each lens exists. I think it was worded as you don't get paid for a lens until it exists on the first of a new month or something along those lines. Is that true as well?
  • Christene Jan 1, 2012 @ 6:53 pm | delete
A lens isn't eligible for Ad payments until it's first full month. So a lens published in December won't earn until January, paid out in March. BUT if you make a sale on that lens in December you do get paid for that on February pay day.
  • MareeT Dec 31, 2011 @ 5:24 pm | delete

Do you think payout paradigm will change on squidoo?
  • JoeCinocca Dec 22, 2011 @ 11:52 pm | delete
I was kinda bummed at my payout, but when I talked to several squids I highly respect, I realize I did pretty good . . . . . for a rookie. Love the info on this lens.
  • baby-strollers Dec 18, 2011 @ 3:18 pm | delete
Thanks for the info - it doesn't affect me much but the squidoo charity fun will be intersted!
  • CityLights Dec 15, 2011 @ 12:21 pm | delete
Is there someplace on Squidoo that shows the payout tiers for that month? My first lens was published in November, so I know I have to wait a bit to see how much I'm earning, but I'm curious to see how my lenses are holding up...has the traffic for November even been calculated yet? Or do we only find that out during the next payday? I'm just slightly confused...
  • Christene Dec 15, 2011 @ 1:23 pm | delete
I'm not quite sure what you're asking. This lens shows all of the payout tiers. Your lens published in November will get it's first tier payment in February. That's when you see how much $ each tier is given. You can see your November traffic in your stats.
  • Christene Dec 15, 2011 @ 1:25 pm | delete
But, your first tier payment will be based on it's average lensrank in December.
  • CityLights Dec 15, 2011 @ 3:36 pm | delete
I see what you mean. I thought I read somewhere that the cutoff points for the tiers fluctuate from month to month and that these numbers are announced around payday...But you're saying that the tiers remain the same, and the amount that each tier gets is what changes?
  • Christene Dec 15, 2011 @ 3:44 pm | delete
Yes, 2,000 lenses are given tier 1 payment, and so on. The amounts given are what change based on how well Squidoo did as a whole. We get half of what the website took in.
  • CityLights Dec 15, 2011 @ 3:50 pm | delete
    Ah, okay, thanks for clarifying!

I have just had my highest Amazon 'payment' from an item of $12.75 appear in my stats. I am really pleased. Is this money all mine or will it go into the tiers? Also, I thought I read that squidoo shared amazon sales 50/50 so if this is true is this $12.75 before or after that 'sharing'? Hope this makes sense. Thank you.

    Dear Christine,

My first published lens is on Nov 16.. I have not made any affiliate sales as of now.. Could you tell me when my first payout will be? And will these 15 days of November be calcualted for lens rank?
  • Christene Nov 23, 2011 @ 12:39 pm | delete
February, based on it's average lensrank for December. The lensrank it's first month doesn't matter.

Is there a lens showing how to make the spread sheet mentioned?
  • Christene Nov 14, 2011 @ 3:22 pm | delete
No. Mine's not anything fancy. Just an Excel file. Dates across the top, lens names down the left hand side, I fill in the amounts each has earned in the middle, and have totals running at the bottom + on the right side.

Good info that answered a lot of my questions. One of the things I am realizing is that if you are not on Squidoo to make money, you really should not be too concerned with the lensrank and the tires.

Hi, Thanks for your info. I didn't see any info on Amazon products pay-outs. I may not have looked closely enough. I use Amazon modules on my lens and my pay-out is about 1.5%! Measly! On my other websites such as howtofeelgood.org at weebly.com, I get the full pay-out of 4-6%. I'm not sure what advantages a Squidoo lens has over having a blog or website where I can receive more of the payout as an Amazon Associate.
    Thanks
  • Christene Oct 12, 2011 @ 12:23 pm | delete
Squidoo splits the Amazon commission with you 50/50. If they earn 8.5% you get 4.25%. (The amount you see pending on your dash is a low estimate.)

If you make a sale through an Amazon module it helps your lensrank, which can lead to a higher tier payout. It's also what help keep Squidoo up and running.

You are allowed to use your own affiliate codes here too though.

    Actually..I have one question.

    1. I don't have a paypal account yet, and so all my lenses are donating to charity. Am I getting the same amount of money that I would be if I was keeping the payout? I want to get an idea of how much I'd be earning before I signed up with paypal.

    2. If I did set a couple of my lens to keep the payout without first adding a paypal account, will Squidoo 'store' it for me until I did get a paypal? Or does this not work?

    Thanks very much in advance.
  • Christene Jul 31, 2011 @ 5:01 pm | delete
Yes, you are earning the same amount. Charity vs. Cash doesn't change that.

If you set your Cash Payout Threshold to a high amount you can store earnings in your Reserve Hopper until you get a PayPal account.

When am i going to see an payment update on the dashboard. Three weeks into squidoo and published four lenses, three are in tier three, but i did not see any numbers except o.oo$.
  • SuffolkJason Jul 4, 2011 @ 11:48 am | delete
Thanks for this excellent lens. It answers a lot of questions. But I still have a couple of questions:
    1) When and where are the tier levels and payments published? So, for example, when and where will the June 2010 tier levels be published?
    2) Where and when can I find out which tier level my lenses achieved for a particular month? So, for example, where and when can I see the tier levels that my lenses achieved for June 2010?
I will probably ask these questions in the forum, but I still think the answers would make a great addition to your lens.
    Thanks
  • Christene Jul 4, 2011 @ 12:02 pm | delete
If you have reached your payout threshold, you see everything on payday in your Squidoo Earnings Statement. June stats show up on August's payday. We can only estimate which of our lenses will fall in each tier before that looking at their monthly average lensrank.
  • SuffolkJason Jul 5, 2011 @ 9:29 am | delete
    Thanks Christene,

So just to be clear. I have 2 lenses. In June I think that one of my lenses was tier 3 and the other nowhere (about 100,000 rank). My one earning lens will have earned about 30 cents (give or take a few cents). Because this is less than my earning threshold of $1, the little blue box will not show on my dashboard on about 15th August. If in July I improve my other lens or add other lenses or earn through Amazon, ebay etc so that my earnings are greater than $1 then in September I will see the little blue box on my dashboard and will be able to see what tiers my lenses achieved up to the end of July.
Any Amazon.eBay commissions show immediately on my dashboard under the $$$ column but are not payable for 2 months.
Is this right? If it is I guess the moral of the story is "If you want to know what is going on, set your minimum payout to $1 and make sure you achieve payout each month."
  • Christene Jul 5, 2011 @ 12:03 pm | delete
    Sounds like you've got it.

I think you will still see a blue box letting you know that money is in your reserve hopper, but you won't see the detailed stats until you reach payout.

Amazon commissions show up under the $$$ when the item has shipped. eBay commissions show up under the $$$ once a month in a lump sum.

I'm not anywhere near fifty lenses and giant squid-dom yet, and I'm wondering how you folks with hundreds of lenses manage to track all those numbers every month. That's a lot of data entry. Thanks SO much for this. I was really lost about the tier thing - just couldn't grasp it. But, you laid it out so that it made sense.
  • wolley_81 Apr 9, 2011 @ 9:04 am | delete
Hi, so does this mean that once you're on Tier 3, you're bound to make at least $0.22 cents on your first month? :) Thanks!
  • sha2 Apr 4, 2011 @ 9:36 am | delete
Can I find out how is it that I sold 3 books the amount is around $40, but I only got payout of only $1.26?? please????
  • Christene Apr 4, 2011 @ 11:53 am | delete
First, always check to see if the item that was bought had a lower price offered (there usually is). We can't see how much a person paid. Then, depending on the amount Squidoo gets, they give half to us. An example: If an item was exactly $40, and Squidoo was paid 8.5% for the sale you'd get $1.70.

    Very useful.
  • pacrapacma Mar 6, 2011 @ 10:11 am | delete
    Nice lens! Very helpful.
I have a question I don't think you've answered. Do Amazon sales show up on your dashboard the day or a few days after they are purchased? I've been getting a lot of click outs on my Amazon book links in a recent LOTD Reading Starts at Home. I don't see any money or sales on my dashboard yet.
This lens made one sale early on. This makes me think I have everything set up right. I still only see the $.35 next to the lens in my dashboard.
Do you know when sales show up?
  • cloudiosify Mar 4, 2011 @ 3:24 am | delete

I hope I will soon see money coming in through ads if not sales - I'm new (or at least, I only just started making lenses) so just now it's looking like a long climb just to reach that $1. :D No mind, I'll keep going.

They won't be in the $$$ column of your dash no. You can see how much you've made through each on payday, and in past payday stats.

  • Bookworm25 Jan 26, 2011 @ 5:46 am | delete
Thanks for the info, it helped a lot, just one question as i am not sure i understood correctly, even if people aren not buying or clicking directly through your lens to the ad, you still get a percentage of the payout? thank you
  • Flynn_the_Cat Jan 26, 2011 @ 4:27 am | delete
Oh! You might want to update the 'first payout' bit, as it's 3 months, not 2 now :D
  • Christene Jan 26, 2011 @ 11:18 am | delete
If you make a sale the month of publishing it's still 2 months. I do say 3 months after publish for tier payments. ;)

Wow, my intention was not really to make money on squidoo, so I dont have many ads on my lenses. I had no idea about the tiers and LR payouts. I have been between T2 and T3 for some of my lenses since I joined last year. Might have to switch to pay out for a bit, it would be nice to make a little money for a while. Thanks for the info!

I dont have payment this day? why?
  • Christene Jan 12, 2011 @ 12:56 am | delete
We were paid for the month of November. Any lenses you published in November aren't eligible for tier payments for that month. If you made a sale you would have seen it on your dashboard. You'll see your first 'blue box' next month.
  • tpnetcom Jan 12, 2011 @ 1:37 am | delete
I think, at November I have 15 lens for tiers 3..
Huufft.. so, I must wait payment at the next month..

I joined Squidoo in 2008 and created a lense back then. I returned in Oct this year, deleted that lense and have created about 25 new ones. I have made 8 sales so far from Amazon and one of the Lenses is in Tier 1. 2 or 3 are in Tier 2.

Would I receive the money in December or January 2011?
  • Christene Nov 23, 2010 @ 10:36 am | delete
If you built a lens in October and made a sale that same month you will get paid for the sale in December. You won't earn ad (Tier) revenue for that month though. You'll get a tier payment in January based on the lens' average lensrank in November.

  • tpnetcom Nov 15, 2010 @ 6:26 pm | delete
these Lens have Ranked #27 in Squidoo Tips, #2,898 overall, that's mean Tiers 1 or 2?
  • Christene Nov 15, 2010 @ 6:41 pm | delete
You look at the overall number. And, it's not the lensrank on any one day, but the average throughout the whole month.
  • george185 Nov 14, 2010 @ 8:30 pm | delete
I wonder if Squidoo is thinking of changing the tiers structure for payouts. There are many more people writing for the site now and getting quality traffic. Just curious.

At last! Somewhere the legendary "formula" of lensrank payments can be found... May I ask were you got this information from? Also, if I have a number of WIP lens', will that influence my earnings in any way? Thanks for this, it really helps visualise the breakeven point!
  • Christene Nov 5, 2010 @ 9:39 am | delete
All of the number are from my own payout stats. Each lens earns money individually, so a WIP has no bearing on how much your published/featured lenses will earn.

I've been wondering about the Ebay module? Is it a good money maker? Do people have to buy things from it to make money? Will we know if someone buys from it? Thanks in advance for answers! This was a great, easy lens to read!!
  • GabrielaFargasch Oct 31, 2010 @ 12:43 pm | delete
Very very helpful, thank you so much for taking your time to write about this.
  • bakerwoman Oct 31, 2010 @ 12:31 pm | delete
Great lens to demystify my earnings which would fluctuate from $24 to $2.17. When I was earning @24/month for 2 months, I never wrote new lenses. When I started to publish more lenses, the money dropped big time. My last earning was $2.17.
Thanks for sharing this. Something we have all been waiting for and explained very well.
  • Lost_in_Mirkwood Oct 31, 2010 @ 11:40 am | delete
That's really useful, thanks. I wasn't sure if I'd ever earn anything writing lenses but now I am inspired to write more! (I only started last week!)

Congratulations on earning LOTD! Could you be convinced to share a template of the spreadsheet you use to keep track of your earnings? Just the setup of it of course, not your actual figures.
  • Oct 31, 2010 @ 7:09 am | delete
Thanks for the info. This has helped clear up some confusion.

I found this helpful because I did not know about tiers. It seems like if I am in a certain tier then it is possible to earn $ even if noone visits my site? Because I would be added in some kind of a mean score? Also, I am not really clear about the ads and if visitors buy something when they click on an ebay or amazon link. I have a feeling that some more advanced features are "unlocked" as we get new points. I am a novice so I only have 1,152 points now! I don't know what that means, but hey....
  • whitemoss Oct 31, 2010 @ 3:42 am | delete
Really clear- thanks! Congratulations on LOTD too.

Lots of great info about Squidoo payday...cleared up somethings I was not understanding even after being on here for 3+ years ;) Congrats on LOTD.
  • JollyvilleChick Oct 30, 2010 @ 11:17 pm | delete
    LOTD - fantastic.
I use the "Lens Labels" in the dashboard to sort my lens by tier. Even though they flucuate and move in and out of tiers, it still helps me see where they stand.
  • RinchenChodron Oct 30, 2010 @ 11:01 pm | delete
I wouldn't have a clue how to create a spreadsheet to track 135 lenses? This is way too complicated, but thank you for trying to explain it.
  • Gail47 Oct 30, 2010 @ 10:49 pm | delete
Great information! It's always helpful to know how best to utilize the tools provided on a site. Also, received new information about what monetization efforts are best. Thanks!

Lots of good answers about squidoo paydays. Now I have an idea of what of I'm doing to get to my payout. I also wasn't aware of the one dollar payout. I am so excited! Thanks for the great info.
  • BarbaraCasey Oct 30, 2010 @ 6:06 pm | delete
Thanks for this information, especially the tier thing. Makes me want to work harder to improve my lens rankings.

  • robert2704 Oct 30, 2010 @ 2:54 pm | delete
Great explanation and congrats on LOTD. Here's a question for you though you may condisder adding. What is the difference from LENSRANK and OVERALL LENSRANK. I worked my butt off to push a lens to under 2k lensrank and got excited I'd made a Tier 1 lens. If it's overall though I just dropped to TIER 3. ti an 11k overall HUH! I'll see if I get paid cents or dollars I suppose.LOL! Thanks
  • Christene Oct 30, 2010 @ 3:06 pm | delete
Tiers are based on a lens' Overall Lensrank. The rank you see on your dashboard. It doesn't matter where they fall within a category.
  • terrapin719 Oct 30, 2010 @ 2:41 pm | delete
Congrats on LOTD :) Thank you for explaining this tier thing, I've never really understood it before now.
  • gypsyman27 Oct 30, 2010 @ 2:41 pm | delete
Good lens and a good idea, explaining the Squidoo payments that we recieve. A penny is better a kick in the you know whats, right? Squidoo is Great no matter how little or how much we recieve, see you around the galaxy...
  • thrivingmom Oct 30, 2010 @ 2:39 pm | delete
This is a great, easy to read explanation. Congrats on LOTD. It's well deserved!

Perhaps you could share your spreadsheet template for us to download and use? Yours sounds much better than mine.
  • Biomechanoid Oct 30, 2010 @ 2:19 pm | delete
Thank you, that lens explains a lot! Perhaps one day I will be able to reach that one dollar payout too.
  • 23squidoo Oct 30, 2010 @ 2:01 pm | delete
Thank you, I learned a lot and will start keeping my own records to make sure I understand the dynamics of the system. Of course, I still Squidoo mostly for my own enjoyment, but it's fun to see if I can make a little money as well.
  • jgelien Oct 30, 2010 @ 1:34 pm | delete
Thanks for the helpful information. I never really looked into the payment structure before. I was just always happy to receive the payments.
