Who, What and Where is St Aiden's Homeschool?
St Aiden's Homeschool was born a number of years ago out of a desperate need to provide quality and affordable education to the masses of people in South Africa (And Africa) who could no longer afford to pay the ridiculous school fees required to enrol and keep your child in a safety-compromised environment, a classroom with 50 odd children of different ages and cultures, in a school of around 1000 students where often the traditional and long-time educators have not moved with the times.
Since becoming legal in 1996 homeschooling has taken off in South Africa and has spread throughout Africa now enabling students and families previously unable, to now obtain quality educational material for free or nearly free.
One such website that caters for homeschooling families, teachers, educators, students and caregivers is St Aiden's Homeschool.

While researching for our studies it became obvious that although there are thousands of fantastic free and affordable homeschool curriculum resources available over the internet, we in South Africa were at a slight disadvantage because of the majority of the material being written for American and European audiences. We decided to create our own and make thousands of free printables available from St Aiden's Website.
Since commencing with authoring and publishing educational and parenting material, we have "set up shop" and partnered with Currclick Publishers, who are arguably the largest homeschool curriculum and resource provider internationally. Our very affordable products are exceptionally well researched, very comprehensive and adaptable for most age groups, and can be used in the homeschool or traditional classroom setting.

Not only does St Aiden's Offer the one of the largest independent libraries of free resources, but in all fairness to homeschoolers around the globe, provides links and information on global homeschool curriculum, requirements, support etc.Amongst some of the hundreds and thousands of free resources are free curriculum, free educational ebooks on every single subject, including social studies that are taught in South African schools and rapidly we are filling up our pages with quality international social studies. The units we supply are wide and varied and include lesson plans, activities, curricula, teacher guides, student guides, lap books, scrapbooks, file folders, ebooks, social studies, seasonal and thematic units (international). Homeschooling is not about sitting at a desk all day :)
We live and we learn - inside and outside.
During my years of homeschooling I have learned as much from my children as they have from being exposed to learning at their own pace, and learning in areas in which they express a keen interest. In weaker areas we use encouragement and different methods to try and instil some interest and understanding - the internet is a great source of valuable information. What happens normally though is that I take all our combined information and combine it into ebook form which I then give to my girls - they love it! They have been a part of the research and creation, they have had input and understanding and their absolute pride when seeing it being made available for download for others to hopefully benefit is in itself a major and absolutely wonderful achievement and encouragement.Visit St Aiden's Homeschool

We learn from other people throughout the world
International author, ethnologist and wonderful British woman, now living in Spain, with her patedernal roots in Ghana, West Africa, is a great friend, mentor and fellow author. On her recent visit to Southern Africa to promote and discuss her books she visited schools, conducted book signings, interviews and visited traditional and ethnic places of interest. Since this was her first ever visit to Southern Africa we crammed as much as we could in her 6 week stay - but even then there was not enough time.
During one of her visits to a local, very lovely school in the Natal Midlands, Dzagbe discussed her book of traditional African Folk Stories (Ghanaian Tales) to hoards of eager young learners - and was invited back and back and back... Her eagerness to learn about South Africa and our diverse cultures (we have 13 official languages) and the childrens' eagerness to participate in discussions on a very surprisingly intellectual level (given some of the ages of the children) regarding authoring and publishing, West Africa and being an ethnologist was captured on both video and photographs.
In this one video slide show (more to follow) we show Dzagbe with a school hall full of Grade 4's (8-9 year olds) - needless to say she became quite the celebrity and was soon recognised everywhere she went.
Homeschooling is not only about learning at home, although a large focus is on life skills and various other aspects. Homeschooled families and associations do in fact interact on an exceptionally beneficial level with traditional schools and the way I see is - a die-hard homeschool fanatic - it's a win-win situation :) Enjoy the video. This morning, while we had our first cup of coffee, I decided to break the routine by checking the movie channels instead of the news channels. And happily, I caught the latter half of 'Miss Potter', a 2006 Chris Noonan film. This a biopic of children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter.
After seeing the movie, I checked to see if 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' was available as an e-book. Sure, it was. Was most enjoyable. Do check it out at

Homeschooling resources and advice for homeschoolers, new and seasoned.
You know you want to teach your kids at home, but what should your focus be and what curriculum should you use? While it's a bit beyond the scope of this page to discuss how to choose a homeschool curriculum, or even why to homeschool, there are a number of very excellent resources that address those topics and do it much better than I could do it here.
I've chosen a few classic homeschool information books to highlight here, but there are new books on the market now that I haven't read since our youngest graduated over six years ago. One of the best ways to choose a book is to read the customer reviews. Click here to find the current bestselling homeschooling how-to and advice books.

- Thank you for commenting on my lens. I love this lens and the hard work you have done to make get the word out on homeschooling. We homeschooled oour son the last year in high school and it made a huge difference in his grades and attitude. I applaud your efforts in this matter.
