St Paddy's Day

What a fun holiday St Paddy's Day can be. In our case we get together with a group of friends and have a party.

We eat Corned Beef and Cabbage... We drink Green Concoctions... We make merry with some conventional and unconventional games... and of course there's lots of blarney going on.

We rename ourselves Kelly, Shannon, Erin, Riley, Patrick... at the minimum we add an O' to the beginning of our name as in O'David or O'Sharon.

At this party "what to wear" isn't a problem. The more green the better.

Here is some of the things we have done in the past to celebrate St Paddy's Day.

The Menu for St Paddy's Day

Corned Beef-Cabbage-Red Potatoes... Cheap-Easy-Delicious.

I ask guests to bring Green Appetizers. Usually will end up with veggie trays, guacamole, lettuce wrapped asparagus with cream cheese and salami, spinach dips... you get the idea, let your guests be as creative as they want, who knows what they may come up with.

I am lucky enough to have a best friend and husband that are wonderful cooks prepare my main dishes so I don't have a Corned Beef and Cabbage recipe to share. I'm sure you can find a great one on allrecipes.com.

St Paddy's Day Games

The games will depend on the guests. We have some friends who will do just about anything and others who see games as torture. I would encourage you, if you are a game player, to introduce those that aren't, to how much fun playing silly games can be. Just about everyone likes competition and will participate. I have converted more than one reluctant game participate into a game player. My two biggest suggestions here are to keep it light and have prizes.

Irish Toasts
When you send your invitations ask each guest to come prepared to give a toast. Most will give one of the traditional some will be very creative. I found a button that said "Blarney Spoken Here" for the prize. The guests voted for the winner by secret ballet.

Hidden Leprechaun
Toward the end of our cocktail hour I asked all my guests to take a seat. Once we were seated we began the toasts. About half way through I announced that there was a leprechaun hiding under one of their chairs, (I'd taped a leprechaun to the bottom of one of the chairs) the person who found it was given a package of "Pot of Gold" candy.

Limerick Game for St Paddy's Day

Just about everyone has heard a version of
"There once was a man from Nantucket"
I challenged my guests to come up with their version. The results were very funny. Some were down right raunchy but we had a lot of laughs hearing the different variations. Once again we voted secretly.
The prize was a bar of soap, "Irish Spring" to be exact.

The proper version of this infamous limerick is...

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who kept all his cash in a bucket
But his daughter, named Nan
Ran away with a man
And as for the bucket Nan-tuck-it

But he followed the pair to Pawtucket
The man and the girl with the bucket
He said to the man
He was welcome to Nan
But as for the bucket, Pa-tuck-it.

Then the pair followed pa to Manhasset
Where he still held the cash as an asset
But Nan and the man
Stole the money and ran
And as for the bucket, Man-has-it

Other St Paddy's Day Ideas

Have a contest for the "Best Wearing of the Green". Again vote secretly.
Give a prized to the first guest to arrive.
Print out song lyrics to traditional Irish drinking songs.

I'm sure when you think about it you'll come up with many more.

I love to give prizes for games. I think it motivates people to participate. A suggestion I would make when giving prizes for games that either a man or woman can win is to give food or drink. Starbucks coffee, candy, sausage and crackers, nuts, there are all kinds of treats that people will love to receive and they won't just end up in a throwing into a garage sale box or worse yet the trash.

I hope this will help to motivate you to have the best St Paddy's Day ever!
