St. Patrick's Day Decorations

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated throughout the world. On this festive and fun-filled day, everyone is a little bit Irish. We wear green, drink green beer, have parades and many cities (Chicago, for example) dye the rivers green in honor of this beloved day.

There is a great deal of Irish folklore that surrounds St. Patrick's Day and most of it cannot be verified. Many of the stories paint Patrick as quite the rascal who finally saw the light. We do know that Patrick was a bishop to Ireland for thirty years converting pagans (probably his former cronies) to Christianity. He died on March 17, AD461 and the day has been celebrated since that time as St. Patrick's Day. In 1737 the St. Patrick's Day custom found its way to America and was first celebrated in Boston. One well known icon of St. Patrick's Day is the shamrock. One Irish tale (which many followers believe to be true) tells us that Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. In sermons, he demonstrated with the shamrock how the Father, Son and Holy Spirit could all exist as separate pieces of the same entity. The custom of wearing a shamrock on Patrick's feast day was started by his followers after the impressive sermon.
