Glass-on-glass Stained Glass Mosaics.

I'm making this page about Stained Glass Mosaic Mandalas inform you about an enjoyable, unusual and creative artform.

Here you can see images and information about the unusual medium of stained glass mosaics. Working in traditional stained glass can be expensive and quite difficult to learn, however there is a more simple alternative for people keen to use stained glass and that is to take up the art of glass mosaics.

Here you will see some examples of my own work in stained glass mosaics. I usually work on round ,precut clear picture glass. Cutting glass into perfect circles is slightly trick as you may imagine, but can be done. I think working in this round format can be particularly effective for this sort of craft.

The Stained Glass Mosaic Method

The Stained Glass Mosaic Technique:

Every stained glass on glass mosaic shown here is assembled from many of pieces of hand cut stained glass and cathedral glasses. To design them, all the elements are first layed out into a symmetrical and geometrical pattern until i am happy with the design.
This can talke a while, i find that it is better usually to use fewer rather than too many different colours.

Once happy with the design it is time to glue each piece onto the a clear glass disc. A clear drying glue such as Weldbond can be used for this. Once all the pieces are set in place and dry, this is then surrounded by a stone effect medium (tiling grout) and finally the Mandala is finished off with a polished metal surrounding, which acts to both frame and protect the mosaic.

What's a Mandala?

The word 'Mandala' is probably ancient Sanskrit in origin and could be defined as meaning "whole world", "wheel"," circle" or "round"

A Mandala has been described as being an image which "expresses a 'microcosm' embodying various divine powers which are at work in the universe." ..Fair enough

Attempting to define exactly what a Mandala is, is a tricky task. However they have been widely used in different forms of meditation and art throughout many different cultures in the world.
