Star Wars- Action Figures

This site is all about getting started with collecting Star Wars characters, it can be a fun and also a profitable hobby but also a little confusing.
l have tried to keep this page as simple as possible with just the basic outline for each subject with a link to a more detailed page.
There are such a mass of Star Wars fan sites on the web that it can be overwhelming and so l have taken the less is more approach.

Star Wars action figures are generally divided into three eras:

1. Vintage (1977-1989)
2. Neo-classic (1990-2002)
3. Prequels (2002-present)

Vintage figures covers the original Star Wars trilogy (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi), these are the figures that started it all. They are basic models but can be very rare and valuable.

Neo-Classic covers basically the same characters as vintage but in new dramatic poses in the Power of the Force 2 collection.
Neo-Classic also incorporates Shadow of the Empire figures and the Power of the Jedi line. The Power of the Jedi line was a crossover between the original trilogy and the prequels.

Prequel figure are the new figures, first produced in 2002 they have the largest range of figures.
The Trilogy collection covers the three original films.
The Revenge of the Sith (ROTS) and Clone Wars series feature characters from Episode II and Episode lll.

A Good place to start could well be with the Clone Wars figures as they are new, readily available and easy to price.

Prequels (2002 - present)

Neo-Classic (1990-2002)

Neo-Classic covers figures produced from 1990 to 2002 and includes the Power Of The Force 2,Shadow Of The Empire and Power Of The Jedi collections.

The Power Of The Force 2 (1995 - 2000)
Kenner released characters that had not been produced in the earlier vintage line and this proved to be a very shrewd move , reigniting interest from vintage character collectors.
Kenner (later acquired by Hasbro) slowly improved the quality of the figures but they have rarely increased in value and can be picked up cheaply on Ebay and suchlike.

Shadow Of The Empire (1996-2000?)
This series was based on a newly created Star Wars storyline and was given its own packaging but only had a limited number of figures.
In 2009 Hasbro released two new figures in their The Legacy Collection.

Power Of The Jedi (2000 - 2002)
This series contained figures from the original trilogy and The Phantom Menace and even 4 preview figures from Attack Of The Clones.

The Neo-Classic series' have stopped production and as such it is necessary to gain an understanding of the value of the figures and there condition ratings, this can be found on my Prequels Lens...Click here

Vintage Star Wars Figures (1977-1989)

This is where it all began

vintage Hans Solo TolToysVintage figures covers the original Trilogy (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) and figures from the Droids and Ewoks cartoons and is covered by Power ot the Force collection(POTF).
Nowadays the figures would appear very basic with limited articulation. These original Kenner figures are the most sought after by collectors and as such can command the highest prices.

In 1995 the toy line was resurrected as The Power of the Force but this is known as Power of the Force 2 by collectors or just POTF2, l know this can be confusing.

Probably the hardset thing for the new collector of vintage figures is estimating the value of the figures, first you have to have a knowledge of the grading system and then a source of reference for identification. Amazon Books can be very good for reference books.
