Starting an Internet Business
Things you should know

Have you recently checked your bank account? How's your savings account these days? If you are currently employed and single then I do not think you really worry or think about that. However, if you are a parent, or you are financially conscious then a hefty bank account is what you want.
When a recession hits, it is a good idea to start thinking about another revenue stream for your family. Some people who lost their jobs actually started to set-up their own businesses online. The capital that you need to Start an Internet Business is minimal as compared to a brick and mortar set-up. After all, an internet-based business grows our marketplace to a global one. Customers will flock from all sides of the world that is how the online business works. For as little as $100 (or less) you can actually start that business online.
Before you launch an online business consider it very carefully. Do people really need this product / service you will introduce to the market. Even before you spend your hard earned money on anything be sure to study your competitors. You can check out your competition by looking them up on yellow pages and online search engines. It would be great if there are only a few competitors working within your target niche since there would be a huge room for growth.
Identifying your niche market is important. The market niche is a portion of the market that you will target as an entrepreneur. A business who targets a niche market, is addressing the needs for a product or service that is not provided by others. This group of individuals will be your biggest opportunity.
As a new entrepreneur, I know you do not have that much money to spare for advertisements. You have to find low-cost marketing strategies, especially during a recession. People's word of mouth is a tried and tested method for generating customers. Another low-cost marketing technique is e-mail marketing. This is wherein an advertiser gives out newsletters that include insightful information. In doing so, the advertiser hopes the readers will click through their website. Collecting email addresses and sending valid offers, and discounts to those who sign-up is a good way of driving visitors to your site.
There are plenty of things that you should know before you start your own online business. The important thing is that you know the basic things as a budding entrepreneur.

You have to master a couple of things for your online business to be a success.
The first step to success depends on you, the entrepreneur. You are in that situation because you chose it. The choices that you make brought you were you are and your business relies on the decisions that you make. The internet offers a lot of great opportunities for everyone. As the entrepreneur, you must figure out the opportunity that would work best for your business.
Step two to a successful business is knowing the system that will work best for you. Yes, it is true that you determine your success but the system you choose to work with will help you get there faster. The speed at which you achieve your goal depends upon the vehicle you chose to sign up with, and how you can relate to it. Life as a whole is an ongoing learning process and it is essential that you improve your knowledge, your skills, and abilities. All entrepreneurs bring certain skills and backgrounds to the business it is essential that they continue to hone those skills that will lead to a successful online business.
Commitment is the fourth step to a successful business. Most Internet home business owners fail because they lack commitment. Keep Your Job and Start Your Business
Why having a full-time job is imperative.

"And what if your business doesn't do as well as you hoped? Be wary of committing too much or you could find yourself in Ragsdale's shoes: The calendar entrepreneur took out a loan to finance manufacturing her initial inventory, but the business has grown more slowly than she anticipated and has only turned a small profit. With sales lower than expected, Ragsdale has been unable to fund marketing to help the business grow faster and she still has to repay the loan."
Why did I cite this article? Because I know a lot of you out there are just getting fed-up with your 9-5 jobs and would like to set-up their own business online. I know how you feel because you are not alone. Many people out there have dreamed of having their own business and being in control of things. This is great of course! However you have to think carefully before you hand in that resignation letter. Will your income (from the business) be able to support you? Do you have enough capital to actually launch your own business?
According to a survey that was done by the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 9.6 million of more than 20.5 million business owners have never considered their business as their primary source of income. With the current economic situation it is understandable why an entrepreneur would want to keep his or her full-time job. An entrepreneur's full time job acts as a fall-back just in case the online business does not go well. I am not saying that it would fail however during the first few months do not expect too much.
Before you go rushing to StartUp an Internet Business, think of the potential downsides. One downside I can think of is your business interfering with your current full time job. If you are working your normal 9-5 job then you must know that your customers online also need you the same time you are working. It would be great if you have a flexible work schedule.
The point of starting a part-time business online is for you to get the right mixture of added income and doing stuff you like. Basically, for me a part-time online business exists to take boredom out of life. If it turns out to be successful then that's just great! If not, please do not be disheartened by it, check where you could have gone wrong. There are a lot of factors why an online business fails, you have got to figure out yours and correct it.
Here are some tips if you want to start your part-time online business:
1. Figure out what you want. One should get a clear picture of their objective in starting an online business. In doing so you would be able to pinpoint what kind of business to start and how you will run it.
2. Make sure that you choose something that you enjoy doing. One of the rewards you get from an online business is that you get to earn while you do something you really like.
3. Choose something that you know well. Say for example you plan to sell motorcycle parts online then make sure that you know a lot about motorcycles and you can easily recommend something to your customers.
4. Formulate a business plan. Even if you plan a part time business, having a business plan is imperative.
5. Schedule. Having a part-time online business and a full time job will demand a lot of your time. Be sure that you know how to schedule work properly and also learn to balance work and play.
Reduce abandonment and increase business profit
Tips to lessen cart abandonment

What is your primary goal as an entrepreneur? It is to solve a customer's dilemma by offering them your product/service; in short it is all about sales. Yes, indeed it is that simple. However, why is it that many entrepreneurs still fail if it is so easy?
Somewhere down the road they made some mistakes. However, these mistakes can be easily rectified and hence get the business back on track.
Here are some tips to avoid shopping cart abandonment:
1. Membership. Make sure that the membership registration is done after the sales is completed. You would see a lot of check out process involves registration of the new member even before the actual shopping starts. As a rule, one should not stall a visitor from buying once they make the decision to do so. You need to be accommodating and you should support their decision by clearly guiding them through your checkout process.
Right after your customer is done with shopping you can now give your customer the opportunity to register. Since you already have some pertinent information about the customer from the actual sale you can pre-fill out the form. This improvement will remove any buying barriers there might be and also customers will see it as an added benefit for them.
2. Show the actual costs. Customers do not like being left in the dark. They have the right to know how much they are actually going to pay, which means you need to include the tax in your computation of the total. It is imperative that you show the visitor all the costs associated with the product either in the first step of the checkout process or in the product description.
If there are various shipping methods available, then choose the most popular. If taxes are applied for certain States then you should mention this early in the checkout process.
3. Give contact details. When a customer is shopping in an actual shop it is so easy to go back if ever they have questions or something goes wrong with the product. However, online customers do not have this luxury. So giving your contact information is a good way to build customer's trust and confidence. Make sure that you mention the following:
- Guarantee
- Return
- Privacy
- Delivery
- Customer service
- Security policies
These things should be visible throughout the checkout process.
4. Indicate customer's progress. Have you ever shopped online and you felt like it was never going to end? You're like, "Geeezz, how many steps are there to complete this shopping!?!" Make sure that you let your customers know how many steps are in the checkout process and to show the progress as customers work through it.
These tips should be able to lessen your shopping cart abandonment rate. Hence, if abandonment is less then it means more sales for you.

Social Media
Just how powerful is it?

One of the most powerful tools that you will find on the internet nowadays is Social Media. For those people out there who are not familiar with this term, social media is basically the definition given to various activities that incorporates technology, social interaction and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio.
You might be wondering as to why I said it is powerful. I was able to say this because the emergence of social media gave the general public exceptional influence in brand building as well as destruction. From blogs to online videos to social networks all of these media forums can have as much of an impact on a company than an article in a newspaper or a segment on TV.
This is reality, and because of this it is vital that companies are aware of how their business and industry are portrayed in the social media sphere. Social media is portrayed as unstructured; it is not restricted by rules and for this reason alone it became a powerful force because everyone has the opportunity to be heard and to make a difference.
The two key elements that should be considered when it comes to social media success are: speed and action. Companies who effectively maximize their use of social media build a positive buzz about their brand and they also quickly respond to an emerging crisis even before it gets out of hand. They use social media as a tool for damage control. These organizations rise to the top because they are able to address issues in a timely manner, and that is crucial for an online business.

Success is just a heartbeat away

After graduating with a degree in management information systems in 2003, Barceloux worked in advertising, but the idea for a site that rented textbooks to students stayed in the back of his mind. In 2006, Barceloux took the plunge and devoted his full time to starting BookRenter.com. He invested all the money he'd earned selling books and spent a year developing the site with some friends from college.
The site, which went live in September 2007, rents books at up to 75 percent off their retail price. Students can rent books for 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 days, and to make a return, they print out a free shipping label and drop it off with UPS. From: Entrepreneur Magazine

Going online
Let your customers feel your presence online

When you have made a successful offline business, what is the next move for you? There is no other option but to expand your presence online. However expanding your presence will raise a lot of questions. It can be a bit tedious most especially if you do not have the required knowledge to sell online. Nevertheless, do not be intimidated by this, you will soon find out that the internet has the power to transform your business and introduce you to markets that you thought was far beyond your reach.
Why should you go online?
One spectacular feat of e-commerce is its capability to impact sales and marketing. Just look at eBay. Last week I was looking for a book that just got released in the US, so I know that it was not yet available in our local bookstore. So I logged on to eBay and as expected I was able to find the book I was looking for from an international seller. What I am trying to say is that by going online you now have opportunity to reach people not only locally but internationally.
According to Forrester, an independent research company that provides pragmatic and forward-thinking advice to global leaders in business and technology, online trade for the US will reach $280 billion by the year 2008.
In one of my readings I saw another research that was done by IPSOS; they arrived with the conclusion that online presence can indeed increase sales. Here are some of their findings:
- Of small businesses that sell online, 64% said the internet has increased their revenues or sales.
- 48% felt the internet helped to expand their geographic reach in the United States.
- 73% saved money by decreasing administrative cost.
From: Entrepreneur Magazine
Equal opportunity, this is so true for online businesses. Why? Because through the internet an entrepreneur has the power to establish his business in the same field as with his competitors. You might feel that you are just a speck in the online business world, don't. With the right knowledge and the appropriate tools your business can be as attractive and functional as any other online store out there.

The power of solving problems
Understand and solve problems

Phil McGraw is probably one of the most famous personalities today. We all know him by his pseudo Dr. Phil. He became known in television as the person who solves personal issues. And he makes a lot of cash by solving other people's issues. Like Dr. Phil, many have made money and built reputation by solving problems.
There are plenty of people and even institutions who offer to solve other people's problem, all of them have the right solution. Some of these problem solvers offer their service for free; some comes with a certain price. If you come up with the perfect solution to a problem, then that is when trust is built. Not only will people trust you but the people you have helped will recommend you to others.
This is just like developing a product/service that will help people in a particular situation. You are faced with the challenge of getting people to use what you are offering, be it free content on your blog, a piece of merchandise or premium service. The more people you help the more popular you get.
Say for example, there are many products out there promising to solve the problem of acne. A plethora of different creams, ointments and dermatological services are offered. In short, if you decide to solve a certain niche's problem then be assured that you are going to go up against other problem solvers. Most of the time your competitors are already engaging to solve the problem of your target market but do not let that fact scare you away. There is always room for a new solution, most especially if the solution that you offer has more force, precision and of course carries its own unique style.
Always remember that you need to identify the problem/s of your target market. How can you do this? Monitor forums, social networking sites, blogs and other places on the web where people interact. Try to understand and dwell into the dilemma they have, and read about the current solutions being offered. It is important that you know what they want but is not provided by anyone.
After you have figured out what the problem is create a solution that builds on the flaws of other solutions. You can also get around the current resolution and attack the problem from a different angle, and using a different methodology.
Solving your target audience's problem is the main purpose of your business. I mean you aim to earn income online right? And the best way to do that is to come up with a solution to a problem. Once you have your customer's trust then rest assured others with the same problem will come to you to get the ample solution.
Areas to consider for your start-up
Key points for your online business
Each and every one of us has dreamed of financial freedom. I think that is the ultimate goal of everyone who has been out of school and currently working, every person wants to have a secured future. But in these difficult times that goal is a little hard to achieve. I mean if you are just going to work your regular 9-5 job and then you are supporting your family with your income, I do not think that would be enough. So what should you do?
The answer is actually really simple: Start your own business. I know these are like big words right? You might be thinking, "I do not have the knowledge or the money to launch an online business even if I want to." Actually, establishing an online business is not as complicated as some of you might think, the key is to know the right Steps to Starting your Internet Business
Here are some key areas that you should consider if you want to start your own business online:
1. The planning process. In everything that we do in life, we have to think and plan it carefully. The same thing is applied when starting an online business. You should plan every detail carefully. Use the internet to gather the necessary information you need, it is the best place to learn and you can effectively manage resources to devise a plan that is perfect for the business you have in mind.
2. Develop your marketing strategy. Exactly how are people going to find you? That is the main question asked when you think of marketing. How will you tell people about the products/service that you offer? I mean sure you might have the greatest product in the market but without good marketing who is going to know about it?
Once you have decided to set-up your online business, make sure that you also determine how you will get the word out. Always remember that people go online because they are looking for something. They are basically looking for stuff to solve the current dilemma they have.
One good way of letting people know of your presence is by writing and submitting "How-to" articles to relevant websites in your industry. A well written article will enhance your company's image and position as an expert because you are able to provide sought after information. Content written around your company or product also helps your business gain credibility, which is extremely important for small businesses.
3. Understand the technological needs of your business. With the emerging technology, it might be a little confusing for you as an entrepreneur on what you should use.

3. Understand the technological needs of your business. With the emerging technology, it might be a little confusing for you as an entrepreneur on what you should use.
Earn your customer's trust
Provide the security that they need

For small businesses that sell online protecting their customer's information is crucial. However all the security features the world can offer is basically useless if you do not have your customer's trust. With all the identity theft happening these days, not to mention fraud many customers are now thinking twice about shopping online.
Of course without any sale happening then your business is in big trouble. Here are some tips that you can use to ensure your customers that your website is as safe and reputable as the major players in the industry:
1. Bolster customer's confidence with third party verifications. Since your business is not as well-known as Amazon chances are your customers do not posses any prior knowledge about you and your company. That is where trust marks come into play.
Trust marks are basically link graphics that you will see on a website which signifies that the site's security and privacy policy have been verified. These certificates give potential customers a feeling of assurance that the business is legitimate.
If you are worried about the added cost of these verifications then I am telling you there is no need to worry. TRUSTe is a company that offers privacy service for $49 per month, it is not that much right? According to research a site's average sale increased from 7 to 12 per cent after enrolling in TRUSTe's program which is really significant if you ask me.
2. Create an original visual impression. Your image as an entrepreneur as well as your company's image depends on how professional your website looks. A professional looking website spells out a lot about your business and it will surely help your business to grow. Of course if there is no visual impact, then there won't be any interest. If you are a serious online entrepreneur and want to have a website that sends the right message to the visitors, you must know that there are some web design techniques simply inappropriate for a business website.
Keep in mind that your website should be able to attract traffic and capture leads. Numerous companies out there are experts when it comes to web design, development, and online marketing. These companies build websites as well as provide assistance with online marketing.
3. Give importance to your copy. Plenty of entrepreneurs out there trying to sell stuff online however; they are not doing a good job. Why is this happening? They are overlooking the importance of getting their message understood by their prospects. If you do not make sure that your message is clear for your visitors, there is no telling how many sales might be slipping through your fingers.
Remember that when it comes to your online business, your sales message is your one and only chance to communicate directly with your potential customers and tell them why they should buy from you over someone else.
Recession proof your startup
Succeed in the crisis

Recession. We have heard this word like a couple of times before I am sure. But what is it recession? As defined by experts, recession happens when the Gross Domestic Product of a country has negative growth rate for two consecutive quarters. The immediate effects of economic recession are: high unemployment levels, housing price declines, and stock market losses.
Even the most seasoned entrepreneur quakes at the mere thought of recession. As a budding entrepreneur you have the advantage of being agile. Meaning you can easily and quickly cut costs and change strategies. In short small businesses can prosper in times like this.
If you are still worried here are some tips you can follow to recession-proof your start-up business:
1. Focus on the necessities. When I talk about necessities, these are products that consumers will pay for even if money is tight. Even if the market is down there would always be products consumers and businesses need basic stuff like:
- Food
- Computer service
- Education
- Health care
2. Use guerilla marketing. Like with any other business in the world, marketing is important to an online business. The internet offers a lot if stuff, and free marketing is one of those. There are numerous ways to promote your business without sinking a fortune in advertising.
The advantage of free promotion is that you get to speak with the person and build a relationship. You can start posting in forums, you can also write blogs that will give you the publicity that you need. Doing these things allows you to display your expertise, build a relationship, and in the long run you will gain the trust of your potential customers.
3. Minimize staff. This tip is not applicable to everyone. Entrepreneurs who are just starting out actually do not hire people nor do they require any. They can actually do everything themselves. Well maybe at first it will be overwhelming but in time you will get use to it. AS your business grows, you can then start adding some employees to help you.
It all comes down to doing business the smart way.
Your Unique Selling Proposition
The importance of being unique

Every person is unique and special; this is what sets us apart from other people. The same thing is true for a business; each has its unique capabilities. Take FedEx for example they guarantee customers of overnight delivery. As one of their loyal customers I can attest that they do deliver packages overnight.
The world of online business is fierce and you have to set your business apart from others. How can you do that? By creating your Unique Selling Proposition or simply put USP. A business' UPS is its unique ingredient that prevents it from becoming a "you too" company. Let us take FedEx's USP which is "When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight." This is so unique because no other courier promises the same thing.
Your business' USP is the secret sauce-the exceptional ingredient that gives the business its uniqueness. The only way to make customers come to you is if you come up with an advertising message about your product that contains the following three characteristics:
1. Your advertisement must make a proposition to the customer. Customers would like to know the exact benefit they will receive if ever they decide to buy your product. Keep in mind that you are not just boosting the image of your product, you should make sure that the consumers is well informed of the benefits your product provides. Your advertisement should say, "Buy this product and you will get this special benefit.
2. Your proposition should be something that is not offered by any competitor. Again, your USP should be your own and customers should know that what you are offering is not available elsewhere so they should take advantage.
3. The proposition must be so strong that it can move large groups of people.
Some billion dollar business empires are created because the business owners develop a catchy USP. If you have the right type of USP for your product or service, that type of outcome is not out of reach.
Increase Online Business Profit
Some tips to help you increase profit

One mistake that many entrepreneurs make is confusing MAKING SALES with MAKING MONEY. A budding entrepreneur, some of them think that a business is all about the number of times the cash register rings. They feel that the more it rings the better, true however there are some other things that have to be considered.
Like say for example, do you have enough money to cover up for the costs as well as take home a hefty sum for profits? Without that then you might as well get another job and work for someone else.
Everyone who goes into business knows that they are there because they want to make money in short profits. However some entrepreneurs forget about the profit part of their business. They neglect to do the math and hence they end up with nothing and what's worse is that they end up owing other people money.
The first step is for you to ensure that you take profitability into every aspect you have. Second, it is imperative for any business to hire an accountant. Your accountant will assist you understand the business' net revenues and also your cash on hand. Third, keep your costs low.
Here are some tips that might help you to boost profit:
1. Consider your price. Many new entrepreneurs think that they will attract more customers if they set a low price. It is true that people will buy from you; however some of them might think that there is something wrong with your product. They might think, "Why are they selling this for half the price, maybe it is defective." Of course you do not want potential customers to assume that.
The best way to develop pricing is by looking at your competitor's price. How much are they charging for this product? You can actually go over your competitor's price for as long as you can justify it. In short, add more value to the product you are selling.
2. Chuck the discounts. Pretend that you own a clothing store, and one of your gimmicks to attract customers is to provide discounts. Say a customer buys a dress which costs $500 and your provide 20 per cent off on the said dress then you are losing $100 in profit. Of course losing profit is not god for any business.
So instead of giving then discounts why not give them something they can actually use? Since you are in the clothing business it would be good if you give then a shirt which costs $50. In doing so you retained $50 which you would have lost if you gave a discount, and also customers will feel happy shopping with you because they got a freebie.
3. Product mix. Again I will use the clothing shop example. Of course clothing shops offer a variety of stuff that a customer can choose from, however not all of these things sell fast. Like say you have a pair of jeans that only sells twice a month and you have 50 pairs in your stock room.
Basically your money is just rotting away in the store room instead of investing in slow moving items check and see what products are really selling and which are not. By getting rid of those slow-moving items, you can put the money into merchandise with the highest turnover.
There are more techniques that you can follow to increase profits. However the key is to always keep your eye on the profit prize. Keep in mind that it is not how much you sell, but how much you earn. The main reason why you started your business is because you want to earn money online so do exactly what you have planned from the start.
