Peace First: Stop the Violence and Start the Peace

Every day or so we turn on the news and hear a horrible story about violence. We may feel that this is a distant experience as if this is in some imaginary far off world and that we wouldn't or couldn't become the victim. Unfortunately, violence in America and most of the world is a very real occurance with high statistics.

If we don't raise our youth to stop the violence than how will we protect ourselves. I used to share the common mentality that violence only happened to "other people." I then read the statistics on violence and discovered how troubling and how frequent in our society that crime occurs. The fact of the matter is we are either too lazy or in denial to be aware of the real dangers and focus more on the more rare unrealistic dangers. If we focused on the realities of violence and not on the "myths" or catchy phrases that are sold to us by the media on crime we would be able to spread more peace and prevent ourselves from falling prey to criminals. We don't want to believe that violence happens because then we have to accept the fear. I want to say to you: do not deny your fears instead embrace your fear. Love your fear and learn how to protect yourself by using that fear.

Donate today to encourage peace and not only will you be creating a safer life for yourself and the ones you love but also for the future.

Why you should donate to Peace First

Violence is often a learned behavior

"Peace First has taught over 40,000 students critical conflict resolution skills; created over 2,500 peacemaker projects that improved communities and instilled a sense of civic engagement in students; recruited over 4,000 volunteers who provided 400,000 hours of volunteer teaching service; and trained 2,500 teachers in conflict resolution and classroom management skills.

We have seen remarkable results in each of our schools: a 60 percent reduction in violence, but more importantly, an 80 percent increase in instances of children breaking up fights, including others and helping one another resulting in better schools and better potential for each child in that school."

Quote from Peace First Website

.

Peace First is a nonprofit that partners with schools to build safe, effective school climates where children learn how to be engaged and active citizens.

"Protecting the Gift" by Gavin de Becker

A book every parent should own.

This life-saving book teaches your children about safety early on so that you can teach your children the skills to protect themselves before entering into adulthood.

He dares to shatter the unpopular truths about crime that we are too afraid to admit.

This book is a ray of hope teaching us that there is nothing unbearable and allows us to tap into our often ignored inner strength.

Author, Gavin de Becker is an expert on identifying threats. He has written books on violence, has been featured on oprah and owns a firm based on predicting violent behavior.

He has worked closely with previous presidential administrations to assess terrorist plots in the United States.

Recent crime stories

Terrifying stories of children accused of committing horrible acts of violence. In these situations these children exhibited a history of violence. If these signs had been addressed perhaps these crimes could have been averted.

Victim, Ortralla Mosley, 15 years old in 2003, High School Student

Accused Murderer, Marcus McTear, Age: 16 in 2003

This is not merely a story, this crime is a reality. Although murder among children is more rare than in adults... it still happens. Plus, I believe it is important to stop violent behaviors before they result in crime.

In 2003 Ortralla tried to break-up with her boyfriend. When she tried to give him the news in the school hallway he stabbed her to death.

Violent behavior can often be predicted. In this case, apparently his previous EX-GIRLFRIEND, Rae Anne had revealed that she had seen signs of his controlling behavior which eventually became abusive. Her mother convinced her to leave the relationship but was fearful during their break-up.

Luckily for Rae Anne she escaped but unfortunately, Ortralla did not.

Micheal Brewer, 15 years old when he became a victim of crime

Denver Jarvis, age 15 when he became accused of attempted murder in 2009

Michael Brewer failed to return a debt and almost paid with his life. Reportedly, due to his reluctance to pay $40 for a video game, his peer, Denver Jarvis and two other friends, Matthew Bent, age 15, and Jesus Mendez, age 16 proceeded to douse their "friend" on fire with rubbing alcohol. Micheal Brewer suffered burns on 65% of his body.

Interestingly enough yes you can trace violent behavior that led to this attack. The parents of Denver Jarvis: Denver Jarvis, Sr. and Sherry Jarvis both had alcohol related arrests. Also Denver Sr. was accused in 1984 of tossing a fiery Molotov cocktail into a neighbor's yard.

What are some of your solutions to violence?

Do you believe informing our youth about how to use conflict resolution instead of crime at a young age will help reduce violence?

Yes

skiesgreen says:

Definitely and you cannot start too young. I would encourage my children from a very young age to examine people who took drugs, committed crime or performed other anti-social behaviour and to point out why they were doing wrong. It had a positive effect on them as they grew up and now pass on those values to their children.

RinchenChodron says:

Absolutely! I am a volunteer for the Children's Global Peace Project. Great lens by the way.

Othercat says:

I've always taught my kids to use their words instead of violence.

sheilamarie says:

The roots of violence are very deep. Yes, violent reactions are learned by modeling others and many children have poor models to show them how to divert their impulses. The solutions require more of us than a simple course, though the course could help. We have to look at deeper violence in our society as well, including how we handle domestic and worldwide problems. And the prevalence of violent images we expose our children to from an early age has a devastating influence by making them feel that reacting violently is "normal" in certain circumstances.
Have you ever read any Rene Girard? I have found him helpful. Maybe I'll make a lens about him.
Sounds like you're doing some great work! Keep it up!

No

JeromeWilkins says:

I believe violence permeates our society. Violence on TV shows and in video games are distorting teenagers conception of wright and wrong.

skiesgreen says:

Ni. I think the media and film makers need to take responsibility for spoiling young brains with violence and for inciting murder and hate by their examples on screen. Also many games are doing it as well. Kids today live in a fantasy world and no amount of trying to resolve it will change how they think.
