Welcome to All about Stem Cell Research and Therapy

Stem cell research and therapy is one of the latest medical technologies being researched and developed with great results. Stem cells are the cells that occur from the beginning of development and they provide the starting material for every tissue and organ in the body. Embryonic stem cells are the earliest forming cells. I will share information on how stem cells are making a difference for many people with diseases such as cancers, alzheimers disease, spinal cord injuries and blood diseases.

How Stem Cells Work

Stem cells can develop into many different types of cells in the body they function as a kind of repair system for the body. These cells can divide themselves without limits and replenish other cells in a living person or animal. When a stem cell divides it either stays a stem cell or becomes another type of cell in the body with a more distinct function like a red blood cell or a brain cell. Stem cells are different from other cells in the body.

What are Stem Cells

Embryonic stem cells are the earliest forming cells. They form quickly after the sperm and egg meet. These cells are capable of forming all embryonic tissues. Stem cells are present in the fetus, child and adult. The adult stem cells are found in many tissues throughout the body such as in the blood, brain, intestines, skin and the muscles. These adult cells are responsible for cell repair and regeneration in the body.

Distinctions of Stem Cells

All stem cells, no matter where they come from have three general distinctions. 1) They can divide and renew themselves for long periods of time. 2) They are unspecialized cells. 3) These cells can give rise to specialized types of cells.

How Stem Cells Can Be Used

One of the most important uses of human stem cells is the generation of cells and tissues can be helpful in many cell based therapies. Stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissue rather than patients having to wait for organs to be donated. The demand for these organs is much higher than the supply so stem cell therapy can bring some relief in this area.

Potential of Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research has the potential to rejuvenate and greatly improve the practice of medicine. Stem cells can also improve the quality and length of an individual's lifetime. There are many ways stem cells can be used in research and clinical studies to benefit mankind. Stem cells hold hope for researchers to grow specialized cells or tissues which could potentially be used to treat many different injuries or diseases.

Diseases that may Benefit from Stem Cell Research and Therapy

Understanding the basic function of stem cells in the body may allow for the development of new treatments and therapies for many conditions. Diseases that may be helped include cancers, muscular dystrophy, alzheimers disease, parkinsons disease, injuries of the spinal cord and many blood diseases. To avoid immune system rejection of stem cells, scientists are steadily experimenting with different methods and studies to generate tissue that will not be rejected. There is still much extensive research that needs to be continued and understood but the potential for a medical break through is on the horizon.
