The Music of Rock Legend Steve Walsh
The 1970s were a time of musical exploration and experimentation. At the same time and just in time, Steve Walsh came on to the scene with the beginning of his amazing musical career. His journey with the band Kansas as well as
the solo work that he has done has given him a home among those that are considered legendary in the music industry.
Steve Walsh was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on June 15, 1951. When he was twelve years old, his family moved to Kansas. Being very interested in keyboards in the beginning and knowing that he had talent in that particular area, he answered an ad looking for a keyboardist. This simple act of musical interest turned out to be the beginning of the band Kansas and although he preferred to play keyboards, it wasn't long until the band recognized his outstanding talent as a singer. Originally named White Clover, it was 1972 when the band changed their name to Kansas. Kansas is still a sought after touring band today. Steve Walsh had been a part of Kansas from the beginning and through most its years and all of its most successful ones. Kansas has been successful for over thirty years and is iconic in the world of rock. They are America's first and foremost Progressive Rock band.
The songs "Dust in the Wind", "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return" are all exceptionally well known songs that were performed by Steve Walsh both on the live stage and in the sound studio. Award winning song "Dust in the Wind" is woven into the fabric of our culture, being used in movies and commercials as well as receiving continuous airplay since its inception on the radio and still a crowd favorite. These songs are now considered icons of the 1970s. There are several that will have stories of teen adventures that go along with the music of Kansas. They are three songs that have won awards and are still well known today by many people, in addition to devoted fans.
Walsh briefly left the band Kansas to form the band Streets in the early 1980's. His band mates were Billy Greer on bass, Tim Gehrt playing the drums, and Mike Slamer on the guitar. In 1983 they released their debut album. The title of their only album was "1ST" and it produced one chart topping single "If Love Should Go". Their second album on Atlantic Records called "Crimes in Mind" produced two MTV videos in 1985, but they broke up shortly afterwards. When Walsh left Streets, Kansas was breaking apart and was at risk of not returning to the musical scene, so he worked to bring them back together with some changes in the band members such as adding the guitar virtuoso from the Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse. Steve Walsh remains their front man today.
In addition to forming and sustaining Kansas, Steve Walsh has also seen success in his solo career. He recorded "Every Step of the Way" as a solo artist which saw quite a bit of success. He has recorded three solo albums altogether, one released in 1980 and not another until 2000. His first solo album titled "Schemer-Dreamer" included the aforementioned song as well as "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "So Many Nights." His next solo album released in 2000 was called "Glossolalia." It includes titles such as "Haunted Man" and "Kansas". His last solo release was released in 2005 and titled "Shadowman." This album included titles such as "The River" and "Pages of Old." Each solo album has enjoyed some success through the Steve Walsh fans that thoroughly enjoy and support his work. His following has been anxiously awaiting the release of his new work and are finally being rewarded for their patience.
His latest efforts include two new songs entitled, "Dark Day" and "Faule dr Roane." These two songs have been recently released and have had a warm reception from Steve Walsh and Kansas fans. These two songs written by Steve Walsh not only feature him as the lead singer and keyboardist, but also feature Joel Kosche from Collective Soul on lead guitar. Kansas' own violinist David Ragsdale and Joe Franco on drums join him as well. "Dark Day" was inspired by the events following hurricane Katrina and proceeds from the song's success will be donated towards the efforts to repair and rebuild the disaster areas.
Steve Walsh has made a lifetime career of success through his musical efforts. His fans are devoted and he has truly earned his title as a rock legend.
