Steven Parsons on Innovation
I studied design in Wellington (New Zealand) specialising in textiles. Back then that meant you learnt everything from textile technology, to photography to life drawing. You didn't learn anything about business and marketing.
I spent the next 15 years or so working for large companies as designer of both stock ranges and bespoke work for large corporate clients.. along a the way I figured a few things out... a lot about design, but even more about marketing..
Design is about finding solutions. Design is about understanding how people react to and benefit from a product so that ultimately they may wish to buy it.
Recently I came to realise that marketing is the same thing, and that really succesful companies get there by odopting 'design thinking'.
There seems to be a disconnect between many companies and design. By applying the basic rules of design to marketing suddenly busisness becomes a lot more fun and a lot more sustainable.

How did I end up on Squidoo?
It turned out my ideas where the same methods being used by many companies to build many fanstastic experiences.. But I was sitting in a design studio by myself instead of getting the word out.
I started reading more books by Seth Godin, and many other authors. I hope in my lenses to share a liitle of what I am finding out..
