And all this time, the river flowed endlessly, to the sea.
Released in 1991, "All This Time" was the first single from Sting's "The Soul Cages" album. Although the tune is upbeat, the lyrics reflect on a serious story about his childhood and his father. Ten years later he later released a DVD of the same name. The DVD follows Sting and his band as they record songs for his album "All This Time" and prepare for a live performance in front of a small group of family and friends in Tuscany, Italy on September 11, 2001.
All This Time: The Song
I looked out acrossThe river today
I saw a city in the fog
And an old church tower
Where the seagulls play
Saw the sad shire horses
Walking home in the sodium light
Saw two priests on the ferry
October geese on a cold winter's night
And all this time
The river flowed
Endlessly,
To the sea.

Sting's comments about "All This Time":
"It's about the death of my father, so its pretty dark as a record but on
this song the words are foiled by this fairly jolly tune. That's something I
like to do quite a lot, combine dark subject matter with up music. No, its not based on a dream. The lyrics seem surreal, but they are all images I remembered from my home town: ferries, priests, shire horses. I grew up by the shipyards. I just wanted to escape. I suppose it was quite a surreal place, though. It is the landscape of my dreams." ( Independent On Sunday, 11/94)

Sting's Comments About the Concert:
"Trudie and I lost a friend in the Twin Towers (investment banker Herman Sandler), and singing was the last thing I wanted to do, to be honest with you. I just wanted to crawl into a corner and cry. I put it to the band. I said, 'What do you want to do' And they all said, 'We wanna play.' It was a much more sombre show than what we had planned. But as the concert progressed, the mood changed. We felt we had every right to be there, listening to music, making music, singing; because really it's the opposite of what terrorism wants. Terrorism wants us to be afraid, to be frightened and to be controlled. So even though, at the time, I didn't want to do it, I've had no second thoughts about whether or not it was right to carry on with the show." (Daily Express, Oct 2003)
