When remodeling a bathroom it is best to let your imagination run wild. With an extensive amount of decor options available, it is now easier than ever to create the bathroom of your dreams. A popular alternative to the classic sink choice is a stone sink. The addition of a stone sink can invigorate even the most ordinary bathroom. Stone Sinks are slightly more expensive than glass and ceramic vessel sinks.

Over the past few years the demand for stone sinks has risen. Homeowners have made the change from sinks composed of conventional sink material to sinks made of stone. The reasons for the switch to this ultra modern and chic material are due to its durability and stylishness. Stone Sinks come in marble, granite, limestone, and soapstone varieties.

Marble Stone Sinks

Marble is a stone used for construction and sculpting. It is one of the most attractive stone surfaces. Its attractiveness is derived from its polished finish. Marble can be quite expensive, but if price is not an issue then a marble sink is an amazing choice. Due to its permeable surface, it is recommended that the sink is sealed prior to use to prevent the stone's pores from absorbing stains. Marble's beautiful shine will be harmed if exposed to a liquid with an acidic content. The sink must be dried and rinsed often to avoid water stains. Only a mild soap solution can be used to clean a marble surface.

Granite Stone Sinks

Granite has garnered a reputation as a stone used for construction, due to the rock's durability. Sinks made of granite are extremely heavy-duty and stain defiant. Granite sinks are also expensive. If these sinks are within one's price range they are another good sink choice. This type of sink must be cleaned regularly to prevent hard water deposits. A regular dishwashing liquid is perfect to clean a granite sink.

Limestone Sinks

Limestone is an abundant stone; it is expensive due to its weight. It is a very sturdy and durable surface. The problem with limestone is its sensitivity to acid exposure. It is recommended for a sink made of limestone to be sealed because they damage excessively and stain easily.

Soapstone Sinks

Soapstone has a smooth and delicate finish. This material is a softer stone and has a soapy feel to it. Unlike its marble and granite counterparts, soapstone is very stain resilient. It is recommended to clean a sink made out of soapstone with a mild soap solution. To keep a soapstone sink looking new, it is necessary to apply mineral oil to it regularly.

Stone Sink Cleaning Tips:

  • Use a stone cleaner with a neutral pH to clean the sink.
  • Prior to applying the cleaner, wet the sink surface, this way the cleaner saturates longer before drying.
  • Apply poultice. Poultice can be purchased in most hardware stores and will remove the stain by absorbing it.
  • After applying poultice to the stain, cover it in saran wrap. Tape the saran wrap down and let it sit for 24 hours.
  • Remove the saran wrap after 24 hours and let the poultice dry. Once the poultice dries, the stain will be absorbed and pulled out of the stone. The poultice can be scraped off when it is dry. Any residue remaining on the sink from the poultice can be washed off with a mild soap solution. The stain should be gone once the sink dries. Some stones such as granite, may take longer to dry than because they are more porous.
