Stop Dogs From Eating poop

How can I stop my dog from eating poop? It's so nasty and can not be healthy for him! There is nothing worse than having your dog give you kisses with poopy breathe, don't you agree?! I walked outside one day and found my dog consuming 'you know what' and was so grossed out! I immediately went inside and did some research to see what I could do to fix this nasty act.

This is what I found out: This problem is more common than you would think. Here is what YOU can do to help with your dogs and their poop devouring ways.

To be able to stop your dog from eating poop, you should first understand why he does it. There are many different reasons why for different dogs, and definitely should not be ignored.

Behavior Definition:

Consuming feces is called Coprophagia, and is most often observed in canine behaviors. Understanding why your dog does this is important so that you know how to prevent this behavior in the future.

Some Reasons Why:

* Seeking Attention From Owner
* May Be Hungry - Their regular diet may be lacking in certain nutrients and minerals and dog is trying to seek out those missing from their diet in poop
* Dominance Issues - If you have other dogs, he may be eating their poop as a sign of submission to the dominant dog
* Boredom, Loneliness, Anxiety or Stress
* Learned Behavior From Mother - Sometimes a dog will watch their mother lick up feces when cleaning up after puppies and mimic mothers behavior
* Feeding Behavior - If you only feed your dog once a day, maybe break up feeding times to twice a day
* Confined to a Kennel, Chained, or Restricted to a Small Yard - may eat poop to occupy himself or clean his personal space. In this case, maybe this dog needs to be exercised and played with several times a day
* Some Like to Carry Objects in Their Mouths - in which case this dog needs more daily exercise, mental stimulation and interaction with his people

Ways To Correct This Icky Behavior

Here are some personal suggestions and solutions:

    Good information, I am having a problem with that right now. My pug is doing it. She started doing that after we moved to another state, so maybe it is because of the stress of the move.Now that I know she is eating it, I get it cleaned up right away so she can't eat it. Yuk!
    Now wonder she has dog breath, lol
