Stop Mail Vacation And Other Tips

When going away on a trip, it is highly recommended that you take a few precautions to secure your home and belongings before you leave. There are criminals who scour neighborhoods looking for homes where it appears that no one is home, so being prepared will help ensure that you do not return home to find that you have been robbed.

One of the simplest ways to do is this to talk to your closest neighbors and tell then that you are going away and ask if they could keep an eye on your home and/or check the doors and windows on occasion to be sure all is OK. Most neighbors are more than happy to help and you could offer the same service to them when they are vacationing.

Be sure not to leave telltale signs that you are away. Cancel the newspaper for the duration of your trip, or have a neighbor collect your newspapers. There is nothing more obvious than a pile of newspapers on a porch to alert passersby that no one is home. You should request the post office use stop mail vacation service to halt your mail delivery while you are not home as well or ask a friend or neighbor to collect it daily for you.

Another great thing to do is to purchase a couple of timer switches to use on your outside lights and for a few scattered lamps inside your home. Set the timers at different times so that the lights come on sporadically in the evenings and turn off in the mornings. A well-lit house is a deterrent to prospective robbers.

One last piece of advice is to be sure to give the phone number where you can be reached to a neighbor-preferably to the neighbor who is keeping tabs on your home. You will want to be notified should anything out of the ordinary occur. Taking these few simple precautions will help to prevent a burglary and will give you valuable peace of mind while on your trip.
