Books from "Stossel" - 2011

Every week on Stossel there's some book (or two or three) mentioned that strikes me as being worth taking a look at. But, alas, there is no book list on the show page. (Why? Why?) That frustrates me to no end, so I'm going to start keeping a list. Each week, I'll have any books mentioned on the show, as well as documentaries and anything else that might be of interest.

Books are often mentioned as proof of the person's expertise to address the topic at hand, so they're usually relevant to the topic. I'll also try to remember to include what their discussion with John entailed. Enjoy!

Why Does Hollywood Get It Wrong

The 5 Big Lies About American Business:
Combating Smears Against the Free-Market Economy

By Michael Medved

Part of the discussion about how Hollywood sees business. Medved has experience within the Hollywood industry in addition to his radio show and book.

Sexy Forever:
How to Fight Fat after Forty

By Suzanne Somers

Kindle Version

Basic point being made here was that Somers is making a case that's outside the mainstream and why do we listen to celebrities like this.

(Note: I think Somers has just as much credibility to write her book as Medved does with his. But maybe it's just because I know that pharmaceutical companies are part of the push behind not legalizing pot, because they can't patent it and create protected markets. Which was one of her arguments as to why the mainstream poo-poos the natural hormones she covers in her book.)

The Future

Gridlock: Why We're Stuck in Traffic and What to Do About It

By Randal O'Toole

Small segment related to cars that drive themselves and how this technology could be available right now if government would get out of the way. Overall show was about what the future could look like if government limited spending and regulation.

The Triumph of Politics: Why the Reagan Revolution Failed

By David Alan Stockman

Only used versions available

This book is old and just crying out for being issued on the Kindle.

Stockman was part of the Reagan administration and was on to talk with Stossel about how the Republicans are as much of a problem with spending as the Democrats. Cuts in government made during the Reagan administration were rolled back and blown past in later years.

Broke: The Plan to Restore Our Trust, Truth and Treasure

By Glenn Beck

Kindle version

Beck was on to discuss the state of the union speech with John on a show about cutting the deficit and budget. And I sincerely hope the book is more coherent then Beck was on the show. I eventually got his point - which was a good one but explained so poorly as to leave you scratching your head. (Had the same issue when Anne Coulter came on the show. Some people need to follow a script, apparently.)

No books this week. John was giving equal time to people who complained about his special last year that criticized the cash for clunkers program, stimulus spending, special tax breaks like for alpaca farmers and more.

The Old Boss, Just Like the New Boss?

Lights Out!:
Ten Myths About (and Real Solutions to) America's Energy Crisis

by Spencer Abraham

Kindle Edition

Former Secretary of Energy was queried as to why he went from saying cut the Department of Energy to being its chair and defending its programs.

The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics

Edited by David Henderson

Henderson was on during a segment about how Canada managed to cut its debt by cutting spending drastically and increasing economic freedoms along the way.

Atlas Shrugged

by Ayn Rand

Kindle Edition

This book came up again as the winners of the Atlas Shrugged video contest were announced.

Ethical Oil:
The Case for Canada's Oil Sands

By Ezra Levant

Kindle version

Levant was on to talk about government regulations on oil drilling, particularly moratoriums. His argument was that restricting drilling in our own waters just forces us to buy oil from less ethical countries, like Nigeria, which doesn't even bother to try to clean up its oil spills. Interesting discussion, and interested to read this. (I think we've seen Levant on here before. Need to check that.)
