My Review

The Art of War by Sun Tzu is an ancient Chinese treatise on warfare and military strategy. It is now required reading for many businesses, law students, and of course militarys. This book gives excellent advice on how to win any conflict and can be applied to any profession or context. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in a competitive environment as The Art of War can become a cornerstone to your success.

Sun-Tzu is a landmark translation of the Chinese classic that is without a doubt one of the most important books of all time. Popularly known as The Art of War, Sun-Tzu is one of the leading books on strategic thinking ever written. While other books on strategy, wisdom, and philosophy come and go, both leaders and gentle contemplators alike have embraced the writings of Sun-tzu.

“The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought.”

I agree with these guys. The Art of War is a masterpiece. It's one of those books that everyone quotes, but few follow.

I bought this book on sale, liking what it promised to deliver. It was supposed to be written for the professional or for the homemaker alike, and I thought the concept to be very interesting. After reading about two thirds of it, I had to stop. What an oversimplified, offensive book. It is clear the book was either written by a simpleton or for simpletons. Every page has one or more headings, as if to instruct the reader what the page is about, as if the reader is unable to decipher that for herself. There are random quotes scattered throughout these headings and subheadings, and at first it appears that the quotes are from the original text, as some are sourced while others not. One believes so until one realizes that some quotes are a bit too modern for such an old text. Then the confusion ensues: Is this the author randomly plucking a cheesy present-day quote, or is the author quoting original author of The Art of War? The idea is an interesting one: to speak and appeal to women, to bring them closer to intellectual ideas of Sun Tzu. The book is ridiculous. It is akin to incoherent stringing of cheesy and irrelevant quotes, past or present. While attempting to speak to women, the book even manages to be belittling and condescending, ‘teaching’ us about the “value of appearing more submissive than we really are”. This is an embarrassing and a failed attempt at empowering women while stringing random cheesy quotes together and using elementary and over-simplified examples to get across points that the author does not seem to understand. I consider this book to be a waste of my money and an ever bigger waste of my time

The best line ever:

"All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy."
