Super Sugars A Wellness Breakthrough
Ranked #98,374 in Healthy Living, #986,359 overall
Glyconutrients or Super Sugars Are Impacting Health
Now I know that when you hear the word sugar, health and wellness are not the first thoughts popping into your head. Hear me out though, because sugars ie. "super sugars" another name for glyconutrients are indeed the latest rage of the scientific and medical communities! One doctor told me they ranked as high as the discovery of penicillin!
Scientists now know that there are at least 8 essential sugars on the exterior of all 60 trillion cells we are made of AND that they are part of the communication system whereby our body talks to itself in a complex and coordinated way in order to keep all systems running smoothly.
Researches recognize that most of us typically only get 2 of these sugars in the SAD (standard American diet). The phenomenal bottom line is that when these "super sugars" are added back into the diet via supplementation the bodies communication system is again up and running!

Sugar Has Never Sounded So Good
The discovery of these super sugars has been so profound and exciting that scientists have added another branch of biology called glycomics (glyco - means sugar or sweet) to study just exactly how these complex substances work in the body. Now before you get excited and think "yummy" I need to explain that I am not talking about the white, melt-in-your-mouth crystals or the globs of gummy sweeteners that people douse in their coffee or tea. I am talking about a class of nutrients that was virtually unheard of until about 15 years ago.
Scientists have identified 8 necessary sugars located on the outside of our cells: glucose, galactose, (these are the 2 most of us do get) mannose, fucose, xylose, n-aceytlgalacotosamine, n-aceytlneuraminic acid, and n-aceytlglucosamine.
They know that these saccharides join with proteins and fats on the cell walls in an innumerable variety of combinations all of which act like an alphabetic code giving specific instructions for specific functions. In other words - it is how one cell identifies the cell it bumps into as being a normal cell or a bacteria cell or a nerve cell or whatever it is.
These structures are the operating system of the body and without them readily available for use when needed - miscommunication can easily take place. Scientists recognize that the body is able to make the "missing" sugars using complex enzymatic mechanisms. However, this was meant to be a back up system and it appears that often the body is unable to keep up with the demand that is required. With inadequate available sugar molecules comes miscommunication which causes improper function of the cell.
These "super sugars" are a vital piece of the wellness puzzle. Everyone needs to be informed about the importance of consuming these vital nutrients.

What is cell to cell communication?
Cells are where everything happens in the human body. They are the key actors in all living things! Cells roam around in our blood taking and receiving and destroying things. They come together to make first tissues then organs and then systems so we can end up with a body. They help us to adjust to changes in our environment and perform a multitude of other very important tasks. They are not static or stationery but instead they are constantly working and moving, sending and receiving and responding to chemical cues that are fed to them - all in an attempt to keep our bodies running smoothly. In this process they are constantly touching and bumping into each other. As they touch each other they talk to each other.
Again the way they do this is with molecules that protrude on the outside of each cell that are precisely shaped "words" that the neighboring cells recognize and understand through their own sense of touch. These protuding molecules are what scientists now recognize to be specific carbohydrate or sugar molecules sitting on top of either protein or fat molecules. Now think about what could happen if one or more of the sugar molecules was missing when the next cell bumped into it.
Compare it to this. Try to write the words "defend me" without being able to use the curved "c" shape ... you would have something like this "l-f-nl m-" Do you see how important just one component of our communicating system is? The sugars on the outside of our cells are just as critical in the entire communication system of our body!

How the immune system is related to the communication process
We know that the immune system is the body's natural defense against disease. It's a complex network of specialized cells defending the body against virus, bacteria, parasites and any other invading infectious organisms. Not only that - it is also where the body fights cancers which are basically just cells that are not growing correctly in the body.
Without the continuous efforts of the immune system disease would quickly ravage us. The success of the immune system depends on the elaborate communication network where millions of cells pass information back and forth continuously. It is imperative that it can distinguish between "self" and "nonself". It must also be able to recognize millions of foreign molecules that we ingest from the air we breath, the food we eat and the water we drink. It must be able to remember previous threats and react accordingly.
When the communication system is working properly a wonderfully sophisticated and sensitive system of checks and balances produce responses that are appropriate and effective.
Scientists have recognized that when any of the eight essential sugars are missing - mis-communication can actually cause the immune system to turn on itself. By supplementing these "super sugars" in the diet the immune system has them readily available for use in the building blocks they require for proper function.

The impact of glyconutrition on our health
Glyconutrition is just a big word for "sugar" nutrition...that is the "super sugars" that we have been talking about. Dr. Luis Romero has stated that "since we know that the eight essential sugars are essential for life, we need to have those permanenly in our daily nutrition." Scientists and physicians around the world are utilizing and studying the effects of these substances. Glyconutrients are a vital piece of the wellness puzzle.
