Why this season's New England Patriots are the best football team in history, even if they don't win the Super Bowl.

If the Pats do win the SuperBowl most football fans will have to concede this season's team was the best in football history. The undefeated '72 Dolphins have always been the gold standard, but if you look at their regular season record, a lot of the victories were against sub .500 teams. The Pats beat a lot of good teams and sometimes on days when they weren't at their best. Dynasty-wise they're up there with the '60's Packers, '70's Steelers and 90's 49'ers.
Salary cap is a good angle but there are a lot of factors when you start bringing in history. The Pats don't have a "fearsome" defense. Their offense is consistently good when it needs to be. They are arguably the best balanced and most deep team in history.

The Pats have won 18 games in a row, which is an all-time record. This also marks their 4th time in 7 years in the Super Bowl. The Dolphins have not done either. The Pats have done this against virtually all the best teams in the NFL and in the era of the salary cap.

If the Pats win the SuperBowl then they clearly are the best team in history. The '72 Dolphins aren't even in the top five of all-time best teams. And the Pats have gotten to this point with a longer season, a salary cap and tougher opponents.

Of course nothing is certain but most signs point to the Pats. Great weather favors their type of offense and their defense has been at least as good as the Giants.

Most of them have been to the SuperBowl before but not with a perfect season on the line. Will they be more relaxed than the Giants because of that past experience or will they tighten up again like they did on their final game vs. the Giants?

The old adage goes, "Defense wins championships." A truer adage might go, "Money buys championships."

That one is a little too cynical, but from the top down, the Patriots have done what is necessary to take down this title going all the way back to last off-season.
