Superdove Book Review
Ranked #5,485 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #191,731 overall
Superdove by Courtney Humphries
Superdove by Courtney Humphries.
ISBN 978-0-06-125916-6
Published by Harpers Collins.
The full title is Superdove How the Pigeon Took Manhattan and the World.
I found this book to be very interesting. The history of the pigeon. If you enjoy learning, you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy animals or birds, you will enjoy this book.
There are 196 pages, 12 chapters and a bibliography for each chapter in the book.
The author spent 4 years on her research.
I was very surprised when I got to chapter 3 and learned that Charles Darwin did a very lengthy study of pigeons.
Another chapter that really interested me was chapter 5, entitled Homing. I always wondered if they really could fly with messages back and forth....and they can. The chapter tells just how they are trained to do so.
The most enjoyable part of the book for me was chapters 8-12 where the author starts her own observations in various places. This happens throughout the book as she does her study but starting with chapter 8 it became more personal to me. At the same time, she is still meeting with others who study pigeons. She even went as far as including her pigeon watching on her honeymoon....that's some husband that she got to be so supportive of her work!
There are several pictures throughout the book which adds to its content.
I learned many things while reading Superdove, and thoroughly enjoyed the reading. My 17 year old daughter is going to read it next.

- As a former New Yorker, I am intrigued. The title alone is enough to grab my interest. My Armenian middle name, Aghavni, means dove (NOT pigeon, thank goodness)!
Thanks for your terrific review!
