The Supermarine Spitfire - the classic fighter aircraft

Ranked #1,565 in Culture & Society, #36,407 overall

About the Supermarine Spitfire

Along with the Hawker Hurricane, the Spitfire is one of the most famous and recognisable fighter aircraft of World War Two. With distinctive eliptical wings and excellent handling, the Spitfire is easly identifiable in silhouette.

Featured in numerous pieces of artwork and fiction, the aircraft has a place in history for its role in the Battle of Britain and World War Two, and the flying survivors are in great demand.

Engine differences

There were twenty four marks of spitfire, and over fifty variants, eventually created which served in roles from fighter to photo recon.

Originally driven by the Merlin engine, later in the war the Griffin engine was used in a number of Spitfires. The Griffin, despite its temperamental nature, gave performance advantages over the Merlin, although at the cost of increased fuel consumption and reduced range.

Later the Griffin engine would be used in the Avro Shackleton, with a change to allow contra-rotating propellors to be fitted. It would also be used in the short-lived Supermarine Spiteful, the Spitfire's intended successor.

Survivors

There are estimated to be approximately 44 flying Spitfires worldwide, as well as sections, and entire non-flying aircraft, in museums.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight numbers Spitfires among its aircraft.

Artwork about the Spitfire

Images of this iconic aircraft

With its iconic past and beautiful lines, it is no surprise that the Spitfire is a common subject for aviation photographs and paintings. There are a few too many for this lens, ranging from Wilf Hardy's action watercolours, to Barrie Clark's iconic landscape, to a full range of photographs so to get a selection of the best, try the following lens.

Alternatively another selection can be found here, on the blog I use to hold extra resources for lenses, including images from Allposters and Amazon.co.uk:
