Unemployed - a Poem

In college, I began to work
To earn paychecks where dollars lurk.
So, gainfully employed I was -
Sometimes with three jobs, just because!
Economies, both good and bad,
It mattered not -- a job I had.

However, now things aren't so great;
In circumstances that I hate,
I learn my life-long skills aren't prized --
In fact, I find I've been downsized!
Now middle-aged, I am annoyed
To face my future, unemployed.

I know my future's in God's hands,
But this is not what I had planned.
So, should this poem your thoughts inspire,
Please contact me! I am for hire!

How to Handle a Layoff - Survival of the Fittest

The key to surviving a layoff is to immediately take stock and develop a personal layoff survival strategy. These first three tips pertain to preparation for a layoff:

1. Advance Notice of Layoff - If you think you are about to be laid off or downsized, don't quit and don't give your employer any reason to terminate you. You may be entitled to some benefits including unemployment or severance if you are laid off for which you might not be eligible if you quit. If you do have a little advance notice that a layoff is coming, stop using credit immediately and save, save, save! Try to put a little cash reserve aside.

2. Find Out if You Are Eligible for Severance - If you hear you might be laid off, read your employee handbook or go online and find out what your company policy is regarding severance. Follow all the steps necessary to get your severance paperwork filed in the appropriate amount of time.

3. File for Unemployment - As soon as you are laid off, register with your unemployment agency and file a claim for unemployment benefits. You should wait a day or two for your paperwork to be put in the system from your former employer, but file within a week of losing your job.

Tongue-in-Cheek Look at Ten Easy Steps to Losing Your Job and Getting Fired from Work

If you are looking for ways to get on your boss's bad side and get yourself fired, here are some quick and easy steps to losing your job:

company and to get yourself fired.

2. Ignore the Customers: Let the customers know you have better things to do than wait on them. Ignore the clients, make them mad, and soon you won't have to fool with them at all.

Facts about Unemployment

Category: File - :World map of countries by rate of unemployment.png|thumb|350px|CIA figures for the latest world unemployment rates

Unemployment occurs when a person is available and willing to work but currently without work. The prevalence of unemployment is usually measured using the unemployment rate, which is defined as the percentage of those in the labor force who are unemployed. The unemployment rate is also used in economic studies and economic indices such as the United States' Conference Board's Index of Leading Indicators as a measure of the state of macroeconomics.

Most economic schools of thought agree that the cause of involuntary unemployment is that wages are above the market clearing rate. However, there are disagreements as to why this would be the case: economists argue that in a downturn, wages stay high because they are naturally 'sticky', whilst others argue that minimum wages and union activity keep them high.

Keynesian economics emphasizes unemployment resulting from insufficient effective demand for goods and services in the economy (cyclical unemployment). Others point to structural problems and inefficiencies inherent in labour markets (structural unemployment). Classical or neoclassical economics tends to reject these explanations, and focuses more on rigidities imposed on the labor market from the outside, such as minimum wage laws, taxes, and other regulations that may discourage the hiring of workers (classical unemployment). Yet others see unemployment as largely due to voluntary choices by the unemployed (frictional unemployment). Alternatively, some blame unemployment on disruptive technologies or globalisation.

There is also disagreement on how exactly to measure unemployment. Different countries experience different levels of unemployment; traditionally, the USA experiences lower unemployment levels than countries in the European Union,http://www.cepr.net/documents/publications/US-EU-UR-2009-05.pdf although there is variant there, with countries like the UK and Denmark outperforming Italy and France and it also changes over time (e.g. the Great depression) throughout economic cycles.

Thepantry says:

Husband unemployed in Indiana since Dec 2007 we have heard that his company is going to close its doors in July so there is no going back. We collected the last unemployment check last week and were told that even though there is an extention he is not qualified. According to what is on the Indiana workone website it says if you exhaust both your state and federal unemployment benefits you are supposed to recieve an additional 13 weeks. So, why the turn down we don't know. I figuire out why in a country like this one we would allow citizens to loose the only income they have. It is not like there are jobs out here because they don't exsist. He looks almost daily because he has worked all of his adult life taking care of our family and is not used to being at home. We haven't yet figuired out what to do next. We have the small income from our online business but that is very slow and doesn't begin to pay the bills. I just hope he or I find something soon before the wolves start getting hungry so far we got them under control for the time being but I am not sure how long that will last.

Temp_Girl says:

Oh dear ... after my divorce -- which came as a surprise -- I "retrained," because my career came at the expense of my ex-husband's. Now I'm finding it impossible to get a job anywhere, even with new training. Sometimes a little temp work, but not enough to keep me from dipping into my savings. It's a tough world out there these days. I don't know what else to do that I'm not already doing.

MiaBellezza says:

I did earn some money from selling my artisan jewelry on eBay but that income has pretty much dried up with the economy, and now I hardly run any auctions. So my main income is from Squidoo and it's only enough to help pay a few bills - so I just keep plugging along making more lenses. I'm thankful my husband still has his job!

KathrynDarden says:

I was laid off in March, so I am currently writing lots of content and creating lenses to earn a little income, share what I have learned, network and feel productive in other words -- to practice what I preach!

What Makes an Employee Disgruntled?

We hear a lot about the "disgruntled employee," so I wrote a 2-part series on what makes an employee disgruntled!

What Makes an Employee Disgruntled? Poor Management Decisions

A Look at Common Management Issues that Lead to Job Dissatisfaction in the Workforce

If you read the newspaper or watch the news a lot, you hear this term frequently about a company being accused of some misdeed by "a disgruntled former employee." Have you ever wondered who this disgruntled former employee is? Were they born disgruntled or did something happen to make
them dissatisfied with their job? Since this person is referred to so much in business reports, it might be interesting to know a little more about who this disgruntled former employee is. To be clear, employees are now also called "associates," so feel free to insert the term "disgruntled former associate" as well as "disgruntled former worker" in place of "disgruntled former employee."

As someone who has been in the workforce for many years, I have had the opportunity to work with many people who became disgruntled former employees. While it is true some of these employees did not actually want to work, or were under the impression merchandise didn't have to be paid for, these are not the disgruntled former workers I am talking about. Most of the disgruntled former employees I have met had reasons to be disgruntled and to leave their employment.

What Makes an Employee Disgruntled? Poor Management Types

A Look at Common Management Problems that Lead to Job Dissatisfaction in the Workforce

Poor management is the number one reason employees become disgruntled and leave their job. According to a Gallup poll of more 1 million employed U.S. workers, the No. 1 reason people quit their jobs is a bad boss or immediate supervisor." (1) There are several management
types that can severely impact an employee's motivation and ability to excel, creating a "disgruntled employee" where there was once an enthusiastic worker.

The Bully

Many managers seem to think the best way to manage is to yell, and come down hard on the tiniest infractions. The Bully picks on the employees they like the least whenever they feel like acting like the Big Cahuna and throwing their weight around. According to a New York Times report, women are more likely to be bullied than men.
