Ushering in the Era of Sustainable Design

Sustainable designs and green designs are used interchangeably. In aspects of building green the terms are complementary to each other. Confusion however exists in the exact meaning of the term sustainable design. The closest analogy in understanding what a sustainable design implies is to view the design as a self driven bio sphere.

Sustainable designs do not tax the environment, are able to recycle most of the products used and help better the living conditions. This involves holistic planning in the use of natural sunlight and wind. The most optimum use of solar energy to reduce electricity consumption and wind flow patterns to reduce the CFC producing air conditioners are some of the aspects of sustainable design. A sustainable design looks at conserving water by harvesting rain water. Recycling of water used for bathing for the kitchen garden is yet another aspect. Conversion of organic wastes generated by humans into manure is a sustainable design feature.

A range of initiatives such as sharing a common swimming pool, common rainwater harvesting plant, solar panels all add up to the conservation aspects in a sustainable design. Why, even car pooling by residents of a green community is part of sustainable design movement. Locally used material which can be replenished are encouraged in a sustainable design. So if repairs are required of the building, material need not be hauled over long distances but be utilized from around the environment. Such initiatives need government aid to succeed. To do this several governments have set sustainable design standards. The LEED standard evolved by USA is the most common one being used all over the world. The contribution of the scientific community in providing life cycle calculations for sustainable designs have been an important factor.

Scientists have helped arrive at life cycle energy analysis and introduction of modern technology to the overall ambit of life cycle calculations for sustainable designs. These include inventing better solar panels, better interface with indigenous building practices with modern equipment and optimum utilization of powerful computing available to arrive at simulations for a truly sustainable design. The Greek concept of 'Gaea', which epitomizes a perfect harmony between Earth and all beings living and non-living, is a final ideal that proponents of sustainable design strive to achieve.

Sustainable design, the new buzz word

More info on sustainable design

Have you ever wondered what will happen when the world runs out of resources? There are tons of people on earth and we all continue to use up resources that are not able to be regenerated. Maybe you've heard the term "sustainable design", or maybe you've heard people throw around the term, "green". Can "greenness" resuscitate the world?

Planet resuscitation begins with sustainable design with can be discussed in easy-to-understand terms. When people design the tools that run our world, they use resources. The resources are either renewable or non-renewable, meaning either they regenerate themselves, or they don't. Non-renewable resources like oil do not regenerate, but renewable resources like timber are able to regenerate themselves%u2026usually. In the design of the tools that keep the world running, preserving resources should be our goal, which means we need to design our tools in such a way that will sustain them.

One of the easiest ways to sustain resources in our own lives is the old "reduce, reuse, recycle" routine. Reduce your consumption of products made using non-renewable resources. Use the things you already have over and over; don't throw away things like waterbottles and then go out and buy new ones! Recycle whenever possible in your home. Allow recycling to be a mission and get the whole family involved, including kids and teens. Kids love to sort and keep any refunds you may get back, while teens look for any excuse to drive-even to the transfer station!

The concepts mentioned that you can use in your own home to promote greenness can also be used globally. If on a global level, countries spent more time reducing the amount of non-renewable resources they used, reusing what they already have, and recycling on a national level, the amount of resources available versus the amount of resources used would begin to fall into equilibrium. Having balance is extremely important.

So, I guess the moral of this story is to use non-renewable resources in moderation. You can't swoop in and save the world alone, but without designs aimed at sustaining resources on an individual level, we will never get to it on a national or global scale.
