Suzumiya Haruhi Series

Jumping on the Bandwagon

The bandwagon actually started quite a while back (to be precise, in 2006) but whatever. The series usually known under the name "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" (or "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu" for the purists) is one of the most noteworthy animes recently, both in terms of quality (I will explore later) and popularity (besides usual mechandise, this anime has a pop-concert and a classical-styled concert. Quite a phenomenon for a mere 14-episode series). Besides, the real life activities associated with this series are very interesting, to say the least. All in all, the Haruhi series is something that is worth attention.

This lens is a mixture between information, gushing about a show I like, abusing links, etc. Hope you will enjoy!

The plot is basically the school-life of a group of Japanese high school student. Add in sci-fi, mystery, a dash of romance and first person narration with unclear distinction between thinking and dialogue as well as a generous dose of sarcasm, we have an unconventional and entertaining story. The author is quite a sci-fi fan with solid maths and physics knowledge, and he likes to show it as well to mess with readers (probably). So sometimes things can get a bit confusing. On the other hand, for certain groups out there, catching various math/physics/sci-fi references, which are actually useful to know what is going on, is great entertainment.

Is this a dancing anime?

Well, no (but the little dance at the ending of the anime is a phenomenon by itself. Just search "Hare hare yukai dance" on YouTube and you'll see. Here is the dance in question). But this is an anime that cleverly adapts the original material (one knows that it is when they managed to transfer into the adaptation the effect of the first person narration which purposefully confuses the readers between thought and conversation), has high-quality as well as consistent animation, and is done with admirable attention to details (the story takes place in a real location in Japan, so just check these pictures comparing between the scenes in the anime and the real scenes). There is a TV series covering the first three volumes (the details are rather complicated) and a movie adapting the fourth one.

The marketing of the anime is also quite clever. In stead of a normal promotion site, they "defictionalize" the website of the protagonists (the SOS Brigade) as appearing in the anime. In addition, this website is modified corresponding to the events as unfold in the course of the broadcast, together with several infamous incidents. No fourth wall, indeed.

Openings and endings

Try to see which math/physics references are in both openings (and numerous others during the anime). Some people actually do that, just check the first entry of this TV Tropes page

SuzumiyaHaruhi

Do you believe in aliens, time travellers, espers, sliders, etc?

You will hear that list an aweful lot ^__^

At the very beginning of the anime, our beloved snarky narrator Kyon claims that he has grown up and no longer believes in fantasy stuffs like aliens, time travellers, espers, sliders. So naturally, he gets entangled with them, courtesy of the eccentric girl Haruhi Suzumiya. Soon his "quiet and peaceful" school-life disappears as he has to deal with all kinds of messes when the fate of the world-as-we-know-it hangs on the whims of a teenager which fluctuate with anything like results of a baseball match or you know, attention (or the lack thereof) of a certain person.
  • Kyon:Kyon He is not the titular character, but the story is told through his view point with his narration. Even so, we don't know his real name ("Kyon" is a nickname which may or may not have something to do with the Greek world for "skeptic") and several theories have been proposed, including that he has the same name as the author. Because of Haruhi, he interacts with the very entities in whose existence he disbelieves: an alien, a time traveller and an esper. And has to move his ass around quite a lot to save the world in various manners.

Despite being very vocal about his "realist" view of the world, Kyon does admit that it would be nice for sci-fi things to exist and while he complains all the time about the antics he gets involved in, he enjoys the excitement (and Haruhi gets the idea of having her own club from him, so in a sense he has responsibility over what happens afterward). He is the foil and anchor for Haruhi, being her friend and effectively protecting the world from her. He is also a nice person at heart in spite of his aloofness and snarky attitude. Also he has managed several impressive things against the odds in his crazy world (making facepalms and comments while doing so), thus he is a force to reckon with. Besides, who would not like a sarcastic narrator?

Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese) and Crispin Freeman (English and a wonderful performance)

  • Suzumiya Haruhi:¨Haruhi An energetic girl, who does not want anything other than making her life "special" by looking for aliens, time travellers, espers, sliders. While waiting for that to happen, she founded her own club to entertain herself: the SOS Dan (backronym for "Sekai wo Ooini Moriagerutame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan or "Spreading Excitement all over the World with Haruhi's Suzumiya's Brigade, also known by fans as "Slave of Suzumiya"). She chooses representatives of different fictional archetypes to be members of the Brigade, namely a silent character, a "moé" character, a mysterious transfer student, and (probably) an ordinary student. Ironically, an alien, a time traveller and an esper join her club, and together with Kyon, they do all their might to lock her out of the loop. They have their reasons: Haruhi can destroy the current reality and create a new one that fits her liking, and apparently no-one can counter her power. Fortunately, she does not know about her ability, yet.

Haruhi is a very polarizing character. She is lively and straightforward in getting what she wants, the type of person who shakes things up. On the other hand, she is also very selfish and acts without caring about other people (to the point of harming them) so it is quite demanding (and sometimes dangerous, literally) to live with her (just ask Kyon and a certain computer club). Sometimes she is the closest thing to the antagonist in this series. There is a reason for she being who she is today, namely the feeling that she is so small and insignificant in this wide world which makes her want to do things that are non-routine and extraordinary, but whether that justifies her actions depends on points of view. I have come across some people viewing her as a tragic character, because everything she does is make-believe with an eternal yearning for something (that she honestly thinks, despite all her overconfident yes-I-can attitude) cannot be attained, and her Brigade continuously foils her dream for change from being realized (hey, they too have rights to live in a world that they want).

Voiced by: Aya Hirano (Japanese) and Wendee Lee (English)

  • Nagato Yuki:Kyon The "silent character" in Haruhi's checklist, and the alien (or more precisely, the humanoid interface of the Data Overmind i.e. an interface created by an alien entity to interact with human). She never wastes a word (there is an episode where she speaks nothing despite appearing half of the screentime), shows little to none emotion, and spends most of the time reading sci-fi novels, her mission being "observing" Haruhi. But that does not mean she is weak, on the contrary, she has proven her badass-ness quite a number of times. And a mission of "observation" can get really, really hard (Endless Eight, I'm looking at you). Kyon spends a lot of time interacting with her and being her bridge to the outside world, and she is very loyal to him.

Yuki is the darling of the fans as well as the author, who states that he has fun writing her character development. It does not hurt that she is so cute. Besides, she is the Wizard of Rock !

Voiced by: Minori Chihara (Japanese) and Michelle Ruff (English)

  • Asahina Mikuru:¨Haruhi The moé (read: fanservice) character in the SOS Brigade and the time traveller who comes from the future to investigate Haruhi. She was literally dragged into the SOS Brigade and is forced to cosplay specifically for moé point. Haruhi made a good choice: both Kyon and Haruhi (seriously!) together with several other characters lust after Mikuru. She seems to be clumsy and is easily bullied (especially by Haruhi) so Kyon could not help standing up for her. Despite Haruhi's demands, Mikuru is apparently quite content with her current position in the Brigade.

Voiced by: Yuko Goto (Japanese) and Stephanie Sheh (English)

  • Koizumi Itsuki:¨Haruhi The "mysterious transfer student" and the esper. Handsome and charming, Itsuki is eager to please Haruhi and constantly annoys Kyon with his cryptic statements which usually end with "I was just joking". Under his smile, he knows quite a lot about what is going on and can give Kyon good advices even if the latter is never really comfortable with him (which probably also has something to do with his disregard for personal space). He is indeed mysterious as he has good self-control and intentionally projects a friendly image.

Itsuki is a difficult character. There is always something he never spells out yet he expects others to know. And he keeps to himself quite a lot. On the other hand, like Yuki, he has a lonely feel about him when he is not charming or confusing other people. For all his cryptic-ness, he is open in the sense that he gives Kyon a warning beforehand about himself. Let's see what unfolds in the future

Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (Japanese) and Johny Yong Bosch (English)

Character Songs

This is a cashcow franchise, after all

Things get a bit silly. Besides the SOS Brigade, minor characters (even Kyon's little sister) have their image songs as well. Here I only put the songs of the five main characters. They sure want exploit the fans' purses as much as possible.
The lyrics of the songs are full of cracks and in-jokes, so it would be helpful to know them (especially when you compare the different versions of "Hare hare yukai": they tweak the lyrics to suit the characters' personality :)). Check the lyrics out here

Teasing, teasing creators

Or "The trolling of Haruhi Suzumiya"

In my mind, the series is associated with unconventional practices. Kyoto Animation and Kadokawa, the creators of the anime, have pulled some impressive stunts that have to be seen to believe (and here I thought that Japan has one of the most conservative business system in the world). I have gushed about the good side above. Here is the dark side, which is amusing but can cause severe annoyance to fans.
  • Anarchronistic broadcast order: To those who have watched the series in 2006, it is very important to specify whether the episode number is the broadcase order or chronological (storyline) order. Just look at this and you'll see why people are confused. To top it all, the first episode is the horrible film made by the SOS Brigade (of course with several unexplainable scenes pointing to what happen in the series) which would not be made (timeline-wise) more than 10 episodes later. Fortunately, this practice is not carried over to the DVD version and the English dub (however, I'd like to see if this trick can be pulled outside Japan. Should be fun)
  • Sneakiness: For three years after the first series was aired in 2006, there is no news about the continuation of the series, outside some hints. Suddenly in 2009, they re-broadcast the series (helpfully in correct order). And in the course of broadcasting, they added in the middle new episodes (with new opening and ending song no less) with contents filling the gaps between incidents portrayed in the original series (to their credits, people who have not read the novels would not feel that something missing from the first series alone, me included). Interestingly, the first of such episodes is about time-travelling to the point of three years ago ( this blogger explains nicely the issue).

While fans were celebrating, they dumped the infamous "Endless Eight" (eight episode with exactly same content, just with different animation and separate voice-acting. It's about a Groundhog Day loop). The poor fans were naturally enraged (although there are different opinions . Yet as the popularity of the studio was at all-time low, the image below appeared and the fandom changed their attitude 180 degree. This article sums up everything.

Haruhi

On another note, the OST for "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" is great! You can buy it here or download it here

Hahuhi Suzumiya's Live Concert

Yes, it is that popular and the Japanese are no slouch at marketing. The concert (Japanese name: Suzumiya Haruni no Genkisou, meaning exactly as the title of this lens) gathers the voice actors of the characters and they perform live the characters' songs as well as some life action skits. I like Kyon's voice actor (Tomozaku Sugita), he's so random and a good entertainer.

The DVD of the concert has been released long ago but is not part of the license in the U.S.

The Genderflip of Haruhi Suzumiya

A proof of the power of fans

One day some fans wonder what happens if the genders of the characters in Haruhi series change. They decided to experiment with the story to see it with their own eyes. The project is called, with true spirits of anime geeks who want to get as Japanese as possible, "Suzumiya Haruhi no Seitenkan" a.k.a. "The Gender-bending (or rather Genderflip) of Haruhi Suzumiya". The creations span across media from writing to drawings. They even remake the character songs, just check the YouTube vids below. I must say the female version of Kyon looks really cute!

Excellent lens and, I think the Haruhi series are the best anime series I've seen. The film was awesome too! :)

I've watched the first season of the anime. Not a huge fan but it was OK I suppose. Frankly, I found the idea that the existance of the whole universe depends on the whims of a capricious, fickle schoolgirl rather annoying, haha.

    Thanks for the comment.
At least the audience has the sadistic fun of seeing those around Haruhi run around to save the world. Like Kyon puts it "The world isn't worth much these days, is it."
