Backroads of Arizona: Your Guide to Arizona's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures (Backroads of ...)

The face of Arizona has changed dramatically over the centuries-but for those who know where to look, the coyote still howls, waterfalls still tumble into deep red rock canyons, and some of nature's finest handiwork is still to be seen along the backroads and byways of the state. For the open-road adventurer or the armchair tourist, Backroads of Arizona is the ideal guide to the state where antelope still roam, cowboys still ride the range, and mail is still delivered by mule train. Jim Hinckley's informative text and Kerrick James' brilliant color photography reveal the Grand Canyon State as more than just desert and towering saguaros: It is a powerful land of compelling variety where a mere sixty-mile drive can transport you from scorching sands to dense evergreen stands where deer and elk roam. Continuing on Voyageur Press' successful travel series, Backroads of Arizona takes you on more than twenty trips to the state's most notable and underappreciated sites. The book covers Arizona's plethora of awe-inspiring natural areas and national parks as well as its many historic sites, including Native American Pueblos and ancient ruins, ghost towns and vestiges of the Old West, and more. Sedona (AZ) (Images of America)

Little more than a century ago, when only a handful of families lived in what is now Sedona, in Oak Creek Canyon, none would have dreamed it would become such a popular destination. The matchless
combination of bright blue skies and red rocks has inspired artists of every medium to attempt to capture the mystic formations. Fortunately some began almost before the town was named after the wife of early settler T. C. Schnebly, who organized the first post office, at the beginning of the 20th century. From early apple growers to artists, what has united the diverse residents of Sedona over time is the conviction that they have found one of the earth's great treasures.
Written by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, a relative of the city's namesake Sedona Schnebly, and Janeen Trevillyan historian of the Sedona Historical Society.

What's a Sedona vortex?

... from The New York Times

For many years now, Sedona has been one of the world's centers for the New Age movement, and large numbers of people make the pilgrimage here to experience the "power vortexes" of the surrounding red-rock country. Around town, you'll see bulletin boards and publications advertising such diverse services as past-life regressions, crystal healing, angelic healing, tarot readings, reiki, axiatonal therapy, electromagnetic field balancing, soul recovery, channeling, aromatherapy, myofacial release, and aura photos and videos.

According to believers, a vortex is a site where the earth's unseen lines of power intersect to form a particularly powerful energy field. Page Bryant, an adherent of New Age beliefs, determined through channeling that there were four vortexes around Sedona. Scientists may scoff, but Sedona's vortexes have become so well-known that the visitor centers have several handouts to explain them and a map to guide you to them. (Many of the most spectacular geological features of the Sedona landscape also happen to be vortexes.)

The four main vortexes include Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Airport Mesa, and Boynton Canyon. Bell Rock and Airport Mesa are both said to contain masculine or electric energy that boosts emotional, spiritual, and physical energy. Cathedral Rock is said to contain feminine or magnetic energy, good for facilitating relaxation. The Boynton Canyon vortex is considered an electromagnetic energy site, which means it has a balance of both masculine and feminine energy.

Must-have books about Sedona and its New Age community

New Age and Neopagan Religions in America (Columbia Contemporary American Religion Series)

This installment in Columbia's Contemporary American Religion series explores the rise of New Age and Neopagan religions in America, phenomena that are difficult to study because of the diverse array of people and movements that claim shelter under their umbrellas. Pike, who teaches religion at California State University, draws attention to the "main concerns and daily lives" of participants in these new religious movements, dissecting what healing rituals, self-awareness meditation and channeling mean to the people who practice them. Pike writes well, with a journalist's eye for an engaging story and a scholar's sense of the larger historical picture. One particularly helpful chapter surveys the traditions' most visible groups and central teachings, which include an emphasis on nature, women's spiritual leadership, seasonal ritual and personal transformation.

The historic mining boom town of Jerome

The hillside town of artists, galleries, eccentrics and historical sites overlooks Sedona and the Verde Valley

Jerome is a tourist destination, with many abandoned and refurbished buildings from its boom town days. Jerome has a large mining museum, presenting the town history, labor-management disputes, geological structure models, mineral samples, and equipment used in both underground and open-pit mining.
The National Historic Landmark designation has assured architectural preservation in this town, a mile high on the side of Mingus Mountain.
Jerome was mined for silver and copper since the Spanish colonial era when Arizona was part of New Spain. A mining camp named Jerome was established on the side of Cleopatra Hill in 1883. It was named for Eugene Murray Jerome, a New York investor who owned the mineral rights and financed mining there. Eugene Jerome never visited his namesake town. Jerome was incorporated as a town on 8 March 1889. The town housed the workers in the nearby United Verde Mine, which was to produce over 1 billion dollars in copper, gold and silver over the next 70 years.
Jerome became a notorious "wild west" town, a hotbed of prostitution, gambling, and vice. On Feb. 5, 1903, the New York Sun proclaimed Jerome to be "the wickedest town in the West".

Books about Jerome, Arizona

The ghost town of Jerome is near Sedona, as are the town's ghosts

Jerome was a mining boom town. After the gold and copper mines failed, Jerome became a ghost town. Locals claim some of the old building, notably the Jerome Hotel, which was once a miner's hospital, is still haunted by some of Jerome's ... not-quite-former inhabitants.

Jerome (Images of America: Arizona)

The rugged mining community of Jerome has thrived by the hard work and hard play of tough men and women pitted against an equally hard mountain. William Murray solicited funding for the Black Hills mining camp from his uncle, a New York lawyer and financier named Eugene Murray Jerome, who reportedly was not interested. However, his independent wife was delighted at the prospect and raised $200,000 in development capital for Murray. In 1882, Frederick F. Thomas, Jerome's first postmaster, named the mining camp Jerome in honor of the family. Jerome boomed, ultimately reaching a reported population peak of 15,000 in the 1920s, then dwindling to a ghost town after the mines closed. In 1967, the town was designated a National Historic Landmark, and today it is a flourishing artist community, as well as a motorcycle and travel destination.

The Grand Canyon is only a few hours' drive from Sedona

One of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the Grand Canyon is unmatched for the vistas it offers to visitors on the rim.
The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata, and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province.
The Grand Canyon is known for its overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.

Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon

Flagstaff-based authors Michael P. Ghiglieri, a biologist who leads river trips in the Grand Canyon and abroad, and Thomas M. Myers, a medical doctor who has treated hundreds of Canyon injuries, have compiled a fascinating chronicle of deaths and dangers in Grand Canyon National Park. The book is arranged by category falls, dehydration, floods, the Colorado River, air crashes, freak accidents, suicides, and murder and at the end of each chapter is a chronological list with names, descriptions, and causes of the accidents. The authors show that most of the deaths, whether of tourists, prospectors, or experienced adventurers, occurred when people failed to pay attention to warning signs or did not use common sense; others are attributed to high testosterone levels.

Desert Star Community School

Waldorf-inspired Charter Elementary School offers top educational opportunities for the children of Sedona

In 2004 a group of Sedona parents and educators began networking and researching to develop a vision for an innovative new Waldorf inspired charter school in Sedona.
Desert Star's 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit, tax-exempt educational organization was approved Sept. 18, 2006.
Desert Star has included "community" in its name to honor and recognize the importance of community participation and involvement in the creation and maintenance of a healthy thriving school.
Whole child education focuses on educating children intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically. We believe that a fulfilled, creative and productive life involves considerably more than mental development or the ability to earn a living. As important as these things are, every child also needs the balance provided by healthy emotional, social and physical development. Both Waldorf education and Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences approach are used at Desert Star to understand and meet the needs of the whole child.
"Whole Child Education" is the consideration of different learning styles. Research in this area has given educators new directions for making changes in their classrooms. Lessons and activities blend cognitive, auditory and kinesthetic approaches to address the students' various dominant learning styles. We will place a high priority on our students "learning how to learn."
Storytelling, language arts, arithmetic, the sciences, singing, art, music, drama and movement will be integrated to provide the students with opportunities to receive information through many modes of learning. The primary guiding principle will be to engage the whole child with the subject matter by incorporating multiple learning modalities into every learning experience.
