Sweetgum
The SweetGum, also known as Liquidambar syraciflua, is a rare tree that can be found in Eastern USA. Its color and fruit are absolutely gorgeous.
Zone:5-9
Leaves
Each leaf grows on its own; they do not share a growth point like certain trees.

Color
During Summer and Spring, the leaves are green like most trees. However in Autumn, the leaves turn dark red.
When the leaves are green they sometimes start to turn slightly white.
Shape:
The leaves are mostly star shaped - though occasionally they'll have 6 or 7 points instead of 5.
They also have deep lines that give it a nice characteristic
Twigs:
They're smooth and dotted and allow for many leaves to grow on them. You can also find many undeveloped leaves ; they feel hairy and look shiny.
Fruit
April and May is when they start appearing but they don't mature until the beginning of Fall

Shape:
They look like spiky balls.
They grow on buds and there are usually multiple ones growing at the same point.
Color:
They start out with a pink-ish color but eventually mature and have a brown coloring.
Trunk and branches

This tree can grow to be 120 feet tall and 5 feet vide.
Bark
The bark is of a Dark Gray coloring and vertically grooved.

The sap that comes from this bark is left to harden and then collected and used to make chewing gum.
