The Soundtrack for SWITCH

Ranked #13,535 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #517,697 overall

Every Book I Write Has A Soundtrack...

It can have a few songs on it to over a hundred. Sometimes, most times, some of the songs are the same. They're songs I love and want to listen to no matter what else I'm doing or writing about. But the rest of the songs are ones that say something about the book I'm writing. They can be pieces of classical music, techno dance songs, acoustic guitar pieces...and everything in between.

I love music. I could write without it, but I'm so glad I don't have to.

I'm going to talk about the music that inspired my upcoming release from Harlequin Spice, SWITCH.

My Writing Soundtrack for Switch

I loved all of these songs as I listened to them over and over again. Without them, I'm not sure what story I'd have told.

The meanings of the songs to the story...

While some of the songs in any given playlist I use as I'm writing might happen to be whatever's popular at the moment and have little to do with the story, there are always a few that simply...work. They create the feeling of the book for me as I'm writing it, and even years later, hearing one of the songs from my soundtrack can remind me of what it was like to be writing that book. I get lost in the music so I can get lost in the book.
  • Whatever It Takes -- Lifehouse.

If there's one song that sums up SWITCH entirely, it's this song. I was fortunate enough to have the chance to hear the band perform the song live in a small, acoustic set at a local radio station. Though I'd been a long time fan of Lifehouse, I hadn't heard this song before. The lyrics just hit me -- it was the perfect song for the book!

"If you can find a reason to stay, I'll do whatever it takes..."

Yes. That's the book. It might not seem like it when you read it, but I'll tell you, that's absolutely how I felt when I was writing it.

  • Without You -- Jason Manns

Honestly, there probably isn't a playlist or a book I've written in the past few years that doesn't feature this song. I love this song with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns. On fire. Burning.

    I love this song.

So, even though I listen to it all the time and have it on most every playlist, it still fit SWITCH.

"Because you fill my heart with joy, and 'cuz you made a man out of this boy..."

    Oh, yes. Perfect.

  • Glory Box -- Portishead

Another song that's on a lot of my soundtracks. I sorta kinda didn't like this song when I first heard it -- "Give me a reason to love you, give me a reason to be a woman..." Well, that really didn't sit too well with me. However, the more I listen to it, the better I like it...and it's really perfect for SWITCH.

  • Hallelujah -- Rufus Wainwright

I know some people swear by the Jeff Buckley version. I love this one. I first heard it, of all places, on the Shrek soundtrack. I listened to it while I painted my dining room, I'll never forget that. I think I cried. It's also a song that ends up on most of my playlists, but it fits SWITCH for the single line --

"I've seen your flag on the marble arch, love is not a victory march, it's a cold and its a broken Hallelujah"

And that, too, is perfect for this book.

Jason Manns does an incredible cover of this song, as well, which seriously? I can't listen to without getting all teary eyed.

  • The Banality of Evil -- Nine Horses

I heard this song in that movie with Jim Carrey...the one with the number in the title...it's escaping me. 23? 28? Anyway, this song...incredible. Gorgeous. Very, very sexy.

The lyrics have nothing to do with the book. I just loved this song.

  • What Would Happen -- Meredith Brooks

Ah, well. What *would* happen if we kissed?

    * * * * *
  • Paperweight -- Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk

"Please leave your taste on my tongue."

    Pretty much says it all.

Switch by Megan Hart

release date: January 2010

Don't think.
Don't question.
Just do.

The anonymous note wasn't for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in the habit of reading other people's mail, but it was just a piece of paper with a few lines scrawled on it, clearly meant for the apartment upstairs. It looked so innocent, but decidedly-- deliciously--it was not.

Before replacing the note--and the ones that followed --in its rightful slot, I devoured its contents: suggestions, instructions, summonses, commands. Each was more daring, more intricate and more arousing than the last... and I followed them all to the letter.

Before the notes, if a man had told me what to do, I'd have told him where to go. But submission is an art, and there's something oddly freeing about doing someone's bidding...especially when it feels so very, very good.

But I find that the more I surrender, the more powerful I feel--so it's time to switch up roles.

We play by my rules now.
