A few facts on the mighty bridge
The bridge weighs over 52,800 tonnes, and has 6,000,000 hand driven rivets holding it togeter and with a summit towering 134 metres above the Sydney Harbour, this makes it the largest single-span steel arch bridge in the world.
The two pairs of pylons at each end are made out of concrete and granite and are 89m high.
The ends of the bridge are located at Millers point and Milsons point.
If you want to know more about the bridge, there are some great books available from Amazon listed further down my lens.
Sydney Harbour
The different climbs available
The first climbs took place in 1998 and they take approximately 3 and a half hours. Dawn, day, twilight and night climbs are available and there are 2 climbing options.
1. The Bridge Climb
2. The Discovery Climb
The Bridge Climb
It takes 3 and a half hours to complete the climb which takes you over the top of the Opera House side of the bridge, to the summit. You then cross over the bridge widthways and come back down the other side.
Daytime, night, or twilight Bridge Climbs are available, and each time of day is unique as you see the city of Sydney is so many breathtaking different ways.
As your tour guide is the only person permitted to have a camera, he or she will take photos of you either by yourself or with your partner or friends at the summit of the bridge. You can purchase these in the gift shop. There are several options available, and definitely worth having just to show everyone that you climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge - what an achievement. You will be the envy of all your friends.
A photo of all the climbers is also taken and this is given to you as part of your climb experience.
Can you see the people all doing the climb?
The Discovery Climb
The route that the climb takes is slightly different to that of the Bridge Climb though. You climb up to the summit the same, then onto the suspension arch of the Bridge. You are able to touch the raw steel and rivets as you scale through the heart of the bridge.
Photos are taken in the same way as on the Bridge Climb.

The Bridge on a glorious day
The weather in Sydney right now
Equipment that you are provided with
A Bridge Suit
A Bridgelamp at night
Comminications equipment
A Bridge Harness linked to a static line throughout the climb
Before the climb, you are kitted out with your Bridge suit and shown all the saftey instructions by your guide who will lead the group of up to 12 people.
You are given a radio and headphones so that you can hear the guide speaking as you climb the bridge. He or she will point out all the landmarks and parts of the bridge.
You have a metal link that is attached to you and the bridge at all times and you just pull it along as you walk.
It can get very windy up there on the bridge, so you can opt to have a cap or beany hat to keep your head warm, because even in the warmest weather, you are so high up that the wind can feel bitter cold. If you opt for a hat, then this is attached to your bridge climb suit so it can't blow away. This goes for sunglasses too, they are attached around your neck, and these are the only items that you are permitted to take on the climb. Everything else must be left in the secure lockers back at the base.

Things you need to know before you climb
2. Climbers must be at least 10 years old and one adult climber must accompany every two climbers between 10 and 16 years old.
3. If you are pregnant less than 24 weeks then a medical practioner must be consulted first.
4. Footwear must be rubber soled such as trainers or hiking shoes and they must be fully enclosed.
5. Make sure you avoid alcohol before the climb as a breath test is done prior to climbing.
6. No cameras or any loose items are permitted on the climb. Your guide will take photos of you at the top of the bridge which are available for purchase in many formats at the shop. A group photograph is taken and given complimentary along with a certificate.
7. Be prepared to climb even in bad weather. The only exception is in the event of an electrical storm, in which case the climb will be postponed for another day or time.

There is a museum that you can look in before you climb up the tower, which shows you photos of building the bridge, and has loads of historic facts about it. There is also a gift shop here too.

Bridge: The epic story of an Australian icon - the Sydney Harbour Bridge
The definitive story of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, one of the world's most amazing engineering feats - a structure that has become an Australian national icon.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge: A Life
On March 19, 1932, after nine years' planning and building, more than a million Australians crossed the newly opened Sydney Harbour Bridge, the largest arch bridge in the world. This lavishly illustrated book celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It tells the extraordinary story of its design and construction, the drama of its official opening, and the way it has taken a central place in Sydney's celebrations and become a much-loved symbol of the city. The Bridge has inspired great art and drawn visitors from all over the world to marvel and climb it, yet it is still so familiar that Sydneysiders refer to it endearingly as 'the coathanger'. The Sydney Harbour Bridge: A Life celebrates not only a magnificent structure, but the people who use it.

My love for Australia and dreams come true
I have always wanted to go to Australia. For years I dreamed about it, and I have been lucky enough to go twice. The first time was something that can only be dreamt about - my friend won a competition on a local radio station and she got to take 3 other people on a 10 day trip to Oz. That was so amazing. We stayed in Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast which is beautiful. What a wonderful holiday that was.
I knew that I wanted to go back, and was lucky enough to go on a 4 week trip to Australia in 2007 with my boyfriend, his sister and parents. It was amazing.
There were 2 places that I always dreamt of going since I was a little girl. One was snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef which I achieved (my lens on this will be ready shortly!), the other was to see the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
What a magnificent structure!
Three days in Sydney is not long enough!
The photo shows the view of the hotel "Siebel Pier One", taken from the pylon
The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb was one of the highlights of the holiday and I would love to do it again in the twilight and night. I climbed it in February and it was extrememly windy and pretty cold up there! I would recommend that you take advantage of the hats available to wear - I didn't and my hair blew everywhere, not to mention the fact that my head was cold, but that didn't stop me from enjoying an amazing experience.
