T206 - THE MONSTER (of all Baseball Card sets)

This page is dedicated to the T206 White Border tobacco baseball card set issued from 1909 - 1911. This set is affectionately referred to as "The Monster", due to the enormous challenge that it posses to those who would seek to acquire all of the cards that make up the entire collection.

The T206 set is truly the Moby Dick of baseball card issues. The sheer investment required to attain one card of each player included in the set exceeds six figures. A highly graded Honus Wager T206 card has sold for more than $2,000,000 at auction.

In addition to cost there are other hurdles that baseball card enthusiasts face when attempting to do battle with The Monster. There are error cards, card-front variations, and sixteen different advertisements possible on the reverse side of the cards. The permutations resulting from the possible combinations of fronts, backs, and errors, coupled with the significant cost required to attain the most rare specimens contained with the set, make the T206 a daunting and formidable quest for even the most expert collector.

Matty - The Christian Gentleman

Christy Mathewson was one of the most dominating pitchers in the game of baseball during the early part of the 20th century. From 1900 - 1916, "Matty" as he was affectionately known, won 373 games and struck out more than 2,500 batters. He managed to maintain an ERA of 2.13 over the course of his entire career, which was largely played with the New York Giants.

A well-educated individual who was known as being a man of high moral character, Mathewson was nicknamed "The Christian Gentleman". Matty attended Bucknell University where he was a member of the literary society and the glee club. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, he was a published author of children's books. Mathewson was truly a role model for his time.

In 1936, Christy Mathewson was honored as one of the "First Five" major league baseball players to be elected into the Hall of Fame. Joining him in the induction to the Hall in that inaugural year were Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Honus Wagner.
