Do Spiritual Gifts Still Exist In The Church Today?

The Bible mentions spiritual gifts - such as discerning of spirits, prophecy, words of knowledge and wisdom, in a number of places.

The passage in 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 is probably the most well known one, and is shown in Footnote 1, in the FootNotes Text Box below

At the risk of oversimplifying things, the christian church today is, broadly speaking, split into two camps.

One side believes that these gifts - including the more obviously supernatural gifts such as prophecy, discerning of spirits and tongues - are still given to believers today by the Holy Spirit.

The other side tends to the view that these spiritual gifts were primarily for the early church period, and have since faded away, even ceased entirely, and so are no longer evident among christian believers.

Given such a background, it is a courageous step for a christian who believes he has received a supernatural revelation from God, to take the step of publishing it in book form.

But that is exactly what has happened with the publication of the book: - T.O.E The Omega Enterprise.

Non-charismatic sectors of the christian church may be inclined to dismiss such 'revelation' as being contrary to scripture. According to them, spiritual gifts have ceased, so it follows - if you hold to that view yourself - that any person claiming to have received a revelation or prophecy from God must have received it from some "non-God" source.

Charismatic christians - those who believe that spiritual gifts still exist in the church - may also have initial difficulty in accepting the book. Many of the popular books on prophecy found in christian book stores today deal with future 'end time' events, and it is unusual to find a book that contains content of this particular nature with a christian emphasis.

But this book is not a foretelling of future events. It is instead a 'revealing of things hidden'. You can check that this definition is scripturally sound here.

The subject matter of the book also adds to the difficulties. You are plunged fairly quickly into the realm of quantum physics and sub-atomic particles

The world of sub-atomic particles is the weirdest place you will ever find.

Objects arrive at places before they are sent. Time passes at different rates. Particles travel at such high speeds that to all intents and purposes they achieve the impossible by being everywhere at once in their orbits.

But are particles really solid "particles" at all? Or are they nothing but energy assuming a physical mass for an almost infinitely small period of time?

And all the energy that is needed to maintain the sub-atomic realm in a state of equilibrium - to keep the particles rotating - seemingly comes from nowhere.

Or does it?

You can begin to see why I say the author is courageous in publishing the book.

God's Final Enterprise

The Omega Enterprise - where the mystery ends...

There are a couple of features of the book that are worth noting. Over the years I have been involved in christian counter-cult ministry. As a result I am quite familiar with what could be called the 'occult' style of writing that you find in both traditional occult and new age type materials.

If the style of writing can be taken as a guide, this book clearly does not belong in that genre.

The content is orderly, well structured, and the author goes to great pains to define terms so their meaning is clear.

This is a marked contrast to the vague wording you find in occult works such as the The Urantia Book, or in other so-called 'channeled ' material from spirit entities such as "Seth", received by a medium while in a deep trance state.

The book itself is in two sections. The first section contains the prophetic revelation, while the second is a collection of aphorisms relating to daily living and personal relationships.

Scientific Truth?

is the revelation really from God?

From the limited research I have done, the first section - the 'revelation' - seems to have support from discoveries and current theories in the field of quantum mechanics. But that support is only 'suggestive'.

While there is a co-incidence of ideas and concepts, there seems to be no firm research that finally answers the question - where does the energy that drives the universe come from?

Which of course is the point of the book. The author claims that his 'revelation' answers that very question; that the source of this energy is the Lord Jesus Christ. He then goes further and attempts to describe the actual process that occurs.

It is this technical description that comprises almost all the revelation content, and it is not easy reading.

The net result is that the question as to whether the process he describes is in fact a 'truth from God' can only be finally answered by science, not theology.

And the scientific jury seems to me to be still out on that aspect.

Quacks and Quarks

The New Age movement and quantum physics

The realm of quantum physics and sub-atomic particles contains much that challenges our concepts of reality and how we perceive it.

It can be quite disconcerting to realise that we as human beings are mostly empty space at the atomic particle level. If you took the bodies of all the human beings who have ever lived, and somehow managed to compress them so that all the atomic and sub-atomic particles were touching each other, it is quite possible you could fit the whole lot of us inside a small freezer.

TOE - The Order Explained by Tellman Publications NZ - where the mystery ends...

The New Age Movement, always ready to incorporate new ideas into its smorgasbord of beliefs, has been quick to 'borrow' concepts from quantum physics. It has put its own interpretation on the science, and come up with a diverse range of new 'spiritual insights'.

Some in that movement link the ongoing discoveries in quantum physics to the so-called "Law of Attraction' as you can see here at this website: The Law of Attraction and Quantum Physics. Their view provides an alternative view of the science, with man at the centre instead of God. And so the 'empty space' that reality mostly consists of becomes filled with themselves.

Dr Candace Pert, one of the popular writers in this field, has also embraced these concepts.

.

Now in her sixties, Dr Pert, who has a scientific background of some renown, appeared in the 2004 film "What the Bleep Do We Know", These days she sees herself as someone who fuses Western science with Eastern thought.

Although Dr Pert has been described as christian by some, her view of God is a very long way indeed from the biblical one. Writing in the Candace Pert blog in 2006, she says "I talk about a "new spirituality" that has nothing to do with the Church, but is grounded in more mystical roots. The God I embrace is within me and within us all, ..." and she describes herself as a "serious scientist lending my research background to the notion that we create our own reality"

She postulates 'molecules of emotion' that can communicate instanteously with each other, sees emotions existing as both energy and matter, and human consciousness as "light".

One of the reasons her arguments appeal to new-agers is that she seemingly lends scientific support to those who want to place themselves rather than God at the centre of the universe. They want the speaker of the words - "Let there be light" - to refer to themselves as being the authors of creation, not the true God

In Dr Pert's view, God ultimately becomes a giant energy "field of all our collective hopes, emotions, and thoughts".

That view is just about as far away from the biblical concept of God as it is possible to get. Buried away in this new age idea is one of the temptations offered to Adam and Eve by satan- that we can be 'as gods' - Elohim, mighty gods; not only omniscient, but omnipotent too. (Genesis 3:5).

Dr Perts ideas are far more ancient than she perhaps realises, even though she dresses them up in a 21st century vocabulary. As you can see there is in fact a vast chasm between whom the new age sees as the ultimate creator of reality, and whom the author of the revelation sees as being its source.

You can find a fairly succinct rebuttal of the ideas popularised by the film "What the Bleep Do We Know" at the science section of the ABC website

Sites I have found useful

Lenses and websites on bible topics especially prophecy. There are quite a few of these around, some more helpful than others. The fact that I've shown a link to a lens here does not mean that I always fully endorse all of the content you might find at that lens.
Prophets Of God
Helps make clear the distinction between Old and New Testament prophets and the nature of prophecy. Good insights into how the New Testament gift of prophecy is generally experienced by believers with that gift. Also discusses the issue of prophecies made that do not come to pass, or are only partially correct.
StirTheWater
One of the most practical and useful sites I have found so far. The site is well worth exploring in depth. You can sharpen your gifts and their effectiveness if you practice them and learn more about them. The training material is well worth the low cost, and there is a free trial period.

I think you are right...'But there is always a need to apply great care in this area, as even when a prophecy about the future comes true, that does not prove beyond doubt that it comes from God. What matters ultimately is its spiritual source....

Thanks 'eccles1' . I should have been more specific the first time around. There is a passage in Deuteronomy 13, verses 1 - 4, which talks about false prophets who foretell miracles and wonders which come to pass, but who then try to use the fact that this happens, to lead people away from the true God. Verse 3 explains why God allows this to happen. There is also a passage in the New Testament at 2 Thess Chapter 2, verses 8 - 12, which mentions people being led astray and deceived by signs and wonders, and who as result no longer accept the true christian gospel.

I have known the authors of The Omega Enterprise since 1983 when the first words of knowledge were received. The previous commentary on the book accurately discerns that it is a "revelation-in-progress" and certainly not anything to do with the New Age, which would be anathema to the authors.
I would summarise the contents as consistent with the formula applied by the Catholic Church to matters prophetic: is it there anything there contrary to faith and morals?
There's nothing contrary so far, and as for the science, it is supposed to be about how God keeps his creation ticking over.
The authors didn't dream it up, it was revealed gradually, step-by-step, and the revelations and the science continue to be a "work-in-progress", a work that fills all who know about it with faith and hope for the future.
This book serves to bring that knowledge and hope to a world that sorely is in need
    of such a vision.

    For "kiwiperson':

Attaching a denominational endorsement to the prophecy could be off-putting for some readers, even though it might bring more comfort to others..

And the Online Catholic Encyclopedia does list a number of criteria to use, not just the one you mention. You can see those at this link, in the fourth paragraph under the sub-heading Recipient of Prophecy.

There is ample support for the idea of 'progressive revelation of knowledge' to be found in this passage of scripture from Isaiah

Isa 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
Isa 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

I have no problem at all with the idea that the revelation is still a 'work-in-progress'

But there is always a need to apply great care in this area, as even when a prophecy about the future comes true, that does not prove beyond doubt that it comes from God. What matters ultimately is its spiritual source.

Light - The Reflex Response of the 'Gonus Valve'!! The Gonus valve is the gateway between the 'Physical World' and the Kingdom of Heaven - the kingdom of light. It is the judgement seat of Christ who said " I am the light of the world ". Up till now this statement has been interpreted as a metaphor, a figure of speech when in truth it is a reality.
The constant that is light is the invariable reflex rate of the P.U.F (pulsed ultimate frequency) the heart beayt of God Who has said.

"I am who am and because I am all is mine to be shared with you in the right way at the right time for the right reason

Bible Prophecy
Bible prophecy is history written in advance. The Bible boldly predicts the future with authority and accuracy because it is true. No other religion can claim this. Understanding why Bible prophecy exists in the first place is very important because about one third of the Bible is prophecy.
