Philanthropist/Entrepeneur and Founder of TOMS Shoes
A Brief Bio of Blake Mycoskie
"Sometimes our greatest setbacks turn out to be our greatest opportunities."
Since he could no longer play tennis and was on crutches, Blake began a national laundry service for college students during his sophomore year. He was a philosophy major who admits he had no business experience or expertise, but it seems he had a God-given knack for it. He went on to start an online poker website which was successful enough to be sold for a pretty profit. He started a billboard business that he also built and sold. He and his sister, Paige, competed in the reality show on CBS called "The Amazing Race" and finished second place.
As a result of being on "The Amazing Race" he visited Argentina where he came upon some young women doing a shoe drive for the poorest children in the country. If they didn't have shoes, they could not go to school. Once again, the entrepreneurial juices started flowing and TOMS Shoes was birthed in 2006. His business model was to make and sell traditional Argentinian farmer shoes (which he had started wearing while in Argentina) and build the cost of another pair of shoes into the price point so he could give away one pair of TOMS Shoes to people in need with every pair of shoes he sold.
In 2009, TOMS Shoes gave away 300,000 shoes around the globe.

Podoconiosis Can Be Prevented With a Pair of Shoes
Tropical Foot Disease Prevention Information
TOMS Shoes is now concentrating their Shoe Drops in Ethiopia where there is a common foot disease called Podoconiosis (PODO) that is caused from walking barefoot on clay in volcanic regions of the world. The dust particles from volcanic soil enters the pores of the feet and attacks the lymphatic system causing an elephantitus-like deformity of the lower leg and feet. The symptoms of the disease usually manifest in the early teen years and affects both male and females.
A simple pair of shoes will prevent the dust particles from affecting the feet of agrarian people around the globe. It is estimated that one billion people on the planet are at risk for Podoconiosis.
TOMS Shoes are being dropped in Ethiopia to help bring social change to these people.
You can help bring more shoes to Ethiopia and other parts of the world where Podoconiosis is prevalent by purchasing a pair of TOMS shoes.

- Very comfortable--husband and daughter like them without socks and wear them long hours at a time. She wore silver ones to prom this year.

- are the ones on ebay real, usually? how do you spot a fake and how do you know when you buy a pair that way that a child in need is still getting a pair in another country? thank you.

- I cannot verify that the TOMS shoes from eBay are authentic, but they all have the TOMS logo label on them. I have also wondered about the second pair going to a child in need when buying from a re-saler, but they original purchase of them would have provided a pair to a child in need. Sorry I cannot be more certain in answering your question. Thank you for viewing my lens.

- I hear you! Go to eBay and check out the TOMS shoes over there; they have a lot of them from a wide-range of prices. I saw them as low as $13.99, but it changes often on eBay. Wishing you the best!
